Yeah so the bracket below the firewall on my gas pedal broke in half. Why did they use plastic? What were they thinking? I dont do much work on cars but i try to do what i can without the fear of screwing anything up. This seems fairly simple so i want to replace it myself. I have a whole extra pedal assembly from the corvette sitting in my back yard. Looks like mostly bolts. I just need to know if there is anything else and how to remove the firewall cover. Thanks guys.

I've never broken my bracket, nor have I done the job, but I've heard of autocrossers in NCCC who have experienced breaking gas pedal brackets. One of the NCCC members was marketing an aluminum replacement bracket, but I can't remember who it was now. NCCC has a group on Yahoo, NCCCNet. You might want to check them out to see if he's still making them.

The changeout procedure is supposed to be a piece o' cake. ;shrug

I didn't break mine on the 90 but it seemed to be binding so I did some repair on it. You need to have a flexible back to do it . two bolts hold it on.
Size 10 I think it was. the biggest trick it getting the cable unhooked and hooked back up. Pull the round plastic retainer from the arm and the cable slips throught a slot at the top. Half a dozen screws hold the cover under the dash, couple are from the side. Is also a light and the computer hookup on the cover. The light can be unpluged and the hookup has to be taken loose. If there is any question about the cable , this would be a good time to replace it. The cable is held in from the inside by plastic clips attatched to the cable. A new cable is about $17 from GM. You will see how it is held in if you see the new one. Also a bit of a trick getting it out but the new cable snaps right in. I hope this helps you some.

Well after removing the 2 bolts from the bracket i unhooked the wire from the engine allowing the gas pedal to come out a little more. unfortunately not enough. How do i disconnect this cable from the pedal with barely any room to work?

Thats the fun part. That and getting it hooked up again.
The plastic piece pops out. I wedged a screwdriver if I remember right.Hard to get more then one arm in there. Once you get the plastic popped out the cable slides out of the top. Oh, think I did that before I took the pedal loose.
but if yours broke out of the piviot then it don't matter, gonna be hard. :ugh

Where this plastic piece exactly? If the pedal wasnt loose there would be like no way i could see the wire because its so far up in the firewall with many wires and other objects in the way. Its hard enough getting one hand up there but 2 hands and a screwdriver? eek. If anything i must now be understanding this very well...

I broke my pedal mount when I was changing out my interior. The assembly is fine as long as you don't put any side-to-side force against it, then you find out how brittle it really is, it snaps very easily. It's really easy to change, just three bolts and replacing the cable and that's it. You may have to remove the driver's seat to get access to the cable, and for the record you will also have to remove the driver's seat when you eventually change the power brake booster.

Ah i did it... was such a pain in the ass b/c theres little room to work but overall it was easy, thanks everyone.

The pedals will wear in the pivot.I can see where they could break after 15 or 20 yrs of use. Plastic also ages. If I remember right the pedal arm itself is metal just the mount is plastic. If mine breaks I will machine a new one from aluminum.

its kinda funny you say that because it broke when i put the pedal to the ground... luckily it was in a parking lot... rofl
