Ok, when I got my car I noticed a "clattering" sound coming from the front area (going over bumps and rough road). I thought it was the suspension or "A" arms at first, but everything was solid. Then I just thought it to be wiring or something.

Recently I read something about brakes. Something about how our front brakes "float"? Sure enough, I reach around the back-side of both front tires and shake/jiggle the calipers and they were making the distinctive "clattering: sound.

What needs to be done to dampen the noise?

I haven't taken the tires off to investigate closer, yet, but am planning on doing that over this Thanksgiving holiday. Just need some some quick advice as to what I should be looking for or seeing in the brake and caliper area.

Thanks in advance!

The pads must be fitted with anti-rattle clips to keep them from doing that. They are little black retainers that fit on the pads bracing against the calipers eliminating the rattle. I hope it's this simple.

Indeed this is a problem...had it when I first got the car and it drove me absolutely nuts since I can't stand any noise in a car whatsoever. The anti rattle springs don't do the job....the brake pads bounce around over rough roads and railroad tracks....makes the car sound like junk. I used some thin rubber material where the pads sit in the knotch, they fit loose for some reason??? The rubber did the job and to my suprise it was still there when I redid the brakes some 5 or 6 years later. Nice and quiet....

Thanks for the replies guys. I know that eventually I will upgrade my current "standard" brakes (non-J55) to at the minimum 13" rotors with GS calipers (maybe some other after market rotors and calipers). Hopefully by then (if the new anti rattle spring clips don't work) the system will be solid and quiet!
