Can anyone point me in the right direction for instructions. I replaced front and rear seals and I still appear to leak around the pump cover. Transmission works great just leaks.
John :confused

Hi John,
Along with the front seal is the pump gasket and o ring. You may also have a worn out pump bushing and/or grooves in the torque converter.

Mike

Mike the torque converter has very minor grooves and I have a B&M replacement on its way. The cover shows signs of a leak but I am hesitant to take it off the last time I tried this on a ford all the parts fell out of it. :hb

Can I replace the gasket at home or does it need to go to a transmission shop? None of my service manuals cover this.

John: :confused

You might want to check and see if the o-ring on the dipstick tube is split. Sometimes this O-ring gets cut when the tube is shoved back into the case after a trans removal and it looks like the front seal is leaking. If there were deep grooves on the Torgue Convertor input shaft it would also leak there but usually when the new seal is installed it ends up running on a different area on the Conv. shaft then the original. Did you use a sealant on the outer metal sleeve of the front seal when you installed the new seal?

Randy

Randy I did not use sealer on the metal of the new front seal. I didn't appear the old was done this way. I checked the dipstick tube and the O ring appeared fine though I may change anyway. I am most concerned with the front pump cover at this point.
John

John, you had the right idea in the other post. Stand the trans up. I use an old grease barrel (16 gal) to drop the trans in. Mark the pump to the trans. Hold the center shaft down while pulling the pump up. The gasket and oring you can do yourself but I would take the pump to a trans shop and let them change the bushing. Once you get the gasket lined up on the trans you a little vasoline to hold in it place. Use a lot of vasoline on the oring. Make a couple of guide bolts to help line up the pump while installing it. You can't turn the pump once it has fallen in place.
Hope this helps,
Mike

Mike do you just assume the bushing needs replaced? Do you know if the gasket and O ring is available through NAPA? It all sounds managiable. I don't have a local transmission shop I trust but I will call around for prices on the front pump bushing. Is there any chance I can cause my self to need a complete rebuild?
Thanks
John

Dont forget to check the gasket on the speedometer cable, mine has gone on me twice now in the last 3 years. As well as the front and rear seals.

I cant figure why they only seem to last 4-5 months, my mechanic thinks its related to the aftermarket headers being to close to the trannie and throwing allot of heat.

Something to consider

John,
Yes I am assuming about the front bushing. If you are daring you can change it yourself. You have to split the pump apart. Getting it back together is the tricky part. Let me know if you want me to go into more detail.
If you pull up on the front clutch hub when removing the pump you could drop a thrust washer and then you're looking at a complete teardown. Pushing down on the front shaft while pulling the pump will keep everything together.
Napa should have all the pieces you need.

Mike

Thanks Mike

I am not feeling real daring at this moment. I believe I will see what the local shops want to do this. I have already gone way over budget on this rebuild. If I add a transmission to the list I may be single again real soon...... or at least wish I was

Thanks will do I am not running headers, I have had the speedo gear inside the tail shaft replace recently as well as the carriage and cables. The transmission had leaked for every other possible location except this one I think.... I will check it out thanks
