Take a look at the spy photos and renderings posted on this site.

There doesn't appear to be any consideration for a front plate on the c6 as there was on the c4's and c5's.

I don't know how many states require a front license plate but I still live in a "backward" state that still requires a front plate. In my state it's $40 everytime you get a ticket for not front plate ( I know from experience) and you cannot pass state inspection without the front plate on the car.

I can just see some chevy dealer coming out to a 60K+ new c6 and screwing a $2 plastic front bracket on the front facia like I have seen on some of the other new cars on the road.

moved to C6

I agree - possibly a big bracket will be bolted to the front bumper?? Or, you can choose not to run one at all ;)

We have the same rule here in Holland.
But most people bold there plate to the rubber strip under the frontbumper.
If i remember it correctly you need to see the frontplate when you're 10 meters from the car... Most don't make it, but willing to take the risk!
I would be ashame to have those ugly sickon things as on vipers or new alfa romeo's :(
And overhere we don't have those small plate's late in the US we have very BIGG plate's (like 2x normal size) luckely c3 and c4 vette have an exeption to carry small plate but most c5's aren't that lucky... Well see.

Greets Peter.
(Groeten Peter. ;) )

I had a 96 TA when I was stationed in V.A. They require a front plate. The only way to mount it was to screw it into the bumper. I was not going to do that. I keep it under my driver seat and when someone asked I told them I just boughy the car and I dont have the bracket to mount it yet. Most of the time they said to atleast put on the dash, which I did. As soon as I was out of site, it went back under the seat.

I'm confident that Chevy Engineering/design teams did not overlook the fact that some states require a front plate. Just wait until the production release on 1-10-04 to find out.

Zippy :) :)

don't be too sure.

Look at what damilier chrysler has done.

the dealer takes a drill makes four pilot holes and then screws
a $2 plastic bracket into the from facia on the 300M ( I think they do the same on the pacifica)

It was a WHOOPS at chrysler and the same can happen at GM

Like the C1s, C2s and early C3s, the C6 will look "natural" without a front plate, and will accommodate one by adding a bracket. If this is the biggest concern about the C6 that remains, it will be a great car!!

Sounds like they're going with the extra plate thingy, that came with the 97 Camaro. It's lying in the trunk, as we dont have to run it in PA, but, i have seen it attached, it's UGLY..
It kinda sticks out from the front fascia.. eeew. But they will have to comply to running a front plate..
We shall see!

GM did this with my 95 Riviera. The dealer screwed on the bracket and it wasn't even close to the center.:hb :hb :hb

RPO Code:
VK3 License plate bracket, front

From the RPO information Rick Daniel posted earlier today.

At least they thought of it. Now they have about 10 months to make it look decent.

Front Plate on the C6 Vette

Since they've done away with the popup headlights
maybe they will have a popup plate bracket so the looks
of the car are only ruined for a few seconds when you activate the "up" plate when you see a cop.

The other solution is for GM to add another option to the list.

A roll of double sided velcro tape to put a front plate on when needed but not permantely ruin the looks of the car.

I guess all the people in the design dept live in a one plate state.

It will be just some type of bolt on bracket. Just drill a couple of holes in the nose and mount it.

I did see a cool mounting on a Mazda Miata once. The plate was mounted back inside the grill opening. Believe that most laws just say it has to be visible from the front. So just stick it back inside the grill :D

How about a spring loaded mount that is inside the grill and hinged along the bottom of the plate. If air is running thru the grill it will fold back. But if you stop it pops up. Hummm, let me see here, it will cost so much to design, then the manafcturing costs and then I could sell it for........ Got to go, see you later :)

Before I did anything creative with the plate mounting in the grill or recessed too far I would check on the law of that State. They can be real anal when it comes to visibility of plate. JMO

The Texas law is not too clear. The vehicle inspection web site says "State law requires that you display two (2) license plates, one to the front and one to the rear. Placement or mounting of license plates is not defined. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/Misc/faq/faq_item.htm#plates

Here is the complete law and it only says that there must be a front and rear plate, no mounting requirements:
§ 502.404. Operation of Vehicle Without License Plate or Registration Insignia

(a) A person commits an offense if the person operates on a public highway during a registration period a passenger car or commercial motor vehicle that does not display two license plates, at the front and rear of the vehicle, that have been:

(1) assigned by the department for the period; or

(2) validated by a registration insignia issued by the department that establishes that the vehicle is registered for the period.

(b) A person commits an offense if the person operates on a public highway during a registration period a passenger car or commercial motor vehicle, other than a vehicle assigned license plates for the registration period, that does not properly display the registration insignia issued by the department that establishes that the license plates have been validated for the period.

(c) A person commits an offense if the person operates on a public highway during a registration period a road tractor, motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer that does not display a license plate, attached to the rear of the vehicle, that has been:

(1) assigned by the department for the period; or

(2) validated by a registration insignia issued by the department that establishes that the vehicle is registered for the period.

(d) Subsections (a) and (b) do not apply to a dealer operating a vehicle as provided by law.

(e) An offense under this section is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed $200.

Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 165, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995.

front plate

I'm reading some of the posts and falling off my chair.

Somebody said it will be a bracket, just DRILL a couple of holes and mount it.

How many of you vette owners are going to let the dealer or
anybody else just "drill an couple of holes" in your car ??

Also, what about resale. Let say the original owner buys a car in a two plate state and then decides to sell it. The dealer or somebody else "drills a couple of holes" to mount the plate.

If you are in a one plate state ( I wish) are you going to buy a car with a "couple of holes" or worse drilled in the fron facia ??

Somebody at GM goofed big time on this. Even if they come up with a bracket that does not permantely damange the front end it will definetly ruin the look of the car

The bracket will have 4 sharp metal spikes. All you will have to do it hold it as centered and level as you can and hammer it into the front bumper. If you're not centered and level the first time, just take a crowbar and pry it off and try again. You'll get it eventually. And you people didn't think the General thought this one through...

:D :L :D

I live in South Orange County, just a bit more rural/urban than the immage most people have of So Cal. Although the Ca law requires a front plate, I have never been told (or cited) to put one on my '87 C4 that I've owned since new.

My wife drove an Olds Cutlass for 6 years, also sans front plate, with out a problem. She had been driving her MB C320 for about 6 months when, on a TOLL ROAD, she was pulled over and cited for no front plate. I mounted the plate with velcro, took care of the ticket, removed and repreped the plate/bracket with a new batch of vecro ready to peal and stick (no velcro on front now) if she is pulled over again. She keeps the plate in the trunk. She has been driving sans plate again now for about 8-9 months, no additional problems thus far.

Just a bit of insight, here in WA the dealer is not legally able to sell a car without the means of mounting the required two plates.
So, if they receive a car without the bracket they add it prior to putting the car on the lot.
No option to buy without it, it is part of the dealer prep once off the truck. I wonder if they will let you request one with the bracket not installed...

I ran my '92 Z/28 for 6 Year's without the Plate....That's the 1st thing I did when I got it Home was "REMOVE" that UGLY Sucker!

Same for my 2000 S/10 Extreme....It came with the "Cover" for
the Plate that Say's "Extreme".....So Far...No Problem's!!

Same for My '87 Vette,It came with the Factory Cover that say's
"Corvette".....No Problem's so far!! :Steer
