Hi,

Ok im trying to change the front shocks and as I had figured I cant get the top nut off.

The little square part that they give you to keep it from spinning now looks non-existant from using various different types of tools to hold it steady.

Anybody got any other ideas other then taking it over to my father inlaws and cutting it off with the torches????

Do you have an air impact wrench? They'll usually break the nut loose and spin it off even if it's corroded, when a hand wrench will never get it off, especially if the flat at the top of the shaft is mangled.

Although a cheapy pancake compressor and an impact

wrench would run you about $125-150 at a Tractor Supply/Northern/Harbor Freight type place, you can get a hammer driven manual thing for $20 or, an electric one for about $50. The multiple hitting action though is fairly critical for breaking something like this loose.

I had the same problem......VISE GRIPS....then use a wrench on the nut.....also spray the nut with some PB Blaster...good luck! Worked on mine.

Ha Ha, Love the sawz all. but pretty hard to get into that little amount of space.

The air compressor was broken so we ended up using the torches. It was pretty scary when the grommet would catch on fire. But we got the shock out.

What a difference I could move the old shocks without even forcing. Now the car sticks to the road instead of feeling like its going to go flying into the ditch.

Now I just have to get a new leaf spring in the back and figure out why my steering wheel is shacking and Im good to go. Propably has to do something with my old worn out tires????

Are they ROUND?

On the bottom even?

Then they ain't "WORE OUT" - they're "SEASONED"!!!
;LOL

Try the composites. They're lighter and give you better ride quality. IMO well worth the extra $$$.

Dont know if i can drop that kind of money on a leaf spring right now. I can get a new steel leaf spring for 200 bucks. And the fiberglass one's are like 300-500.

Im also considering getting it rebuilt for around 80. Doesn't help that i live in northern canada. Where vette parts are extra expensive.
