I am going with a 255 45 Sumitomo on the stock 17" front rims and it is about 1/2" taller than the runflats, although no wider. The tire shop says I will have rubbing issues. They are not a performance tire specialist so not sure if I should take the car elsewhere. Will this 1/2" height cause rubbing? How much room to work with is in the wheel well?

I don't think there will be a problem at the top of the tire, because there is plenty of room for wheel travel. When turning the wheel however, you should measure the clearance from the edges of the tire to the inside of the wheel well.
