I am getting the chrome off the car and in the process of getting the front turn signal housing out, I am trying to get the cable/wire off the back of the housing.

I tried pulling on it, but it seems really tight....put a plier on it and that didn't seem to do any better...I don't want to force it if there is some way to do it....I don't want to break anything.....

Anyone???????

Herb the wire should have a plug connector on it that connecs up in the grill area, it does not disconect from the marker assembly. file the wire up into the grill area and youll see where to disconect it. it has a tail on it about 12 to 14" long

I don't think it comes off... follow the wiring pigtail and see if there isn't a wiring connection about 18 inches or so away from the lamp.

Hi!

If I remember correctly there is a rubber end that connects into the inner fenders and forms a plug point to connect to the wire harness.

ok....I went ahead to the rears.....and the first one was more like I thought it should be, with a bayonet type connector on the end of the housing, see below...

The other one when I took it out, it didn't have the bayonet type connector on the end and I could see where BUBBA had been there splicing wires and just making a mess of the wiring. This type of connector on the end of othe housing is what the front turn signal lights are like....so if it comes out with a long pigtail on it, what do you do about replacements? They come with a long pigtail on them too? The front turn signal housings need to be either redone or replaced....if redone then the plater is not going to want those wires sticking out and if replaced with reproduced versions then they come with the pig tail on them? And what about wiring harnesses that you replace? They allow for a 14 inch pigtail and have the appropriate connector on them?

How is your chrome? If the chrome is in good condition you can pick up an original set, straighten the rolled over end that connects the socket to the chrome and install the replacement. I did this when restoring my 65 and they look great. I just ordered a set of reproductions front parking lights for my 63 and was very disappointed with the quality. The Guided Light set that I purchased for my 61 were excellent.

Firstgear, I replaced the front parking/turn signal housings on my 61 and it was complete with the pigtail and even the lamp and I believe it also came with the gasket that fits between the body and the housing. Got it from Paragon.

the front turn signal housings need to be rechromed or replaced....where did you get your turn signal housings for the 61? I am going to get by for now with the rear taillight housings and lights....there are pretty good, as I am going through things that I see now, the money is adding up in a hurry, so I am deciding about things that must be done versus those that can wait till a better money time....the tail lights fall in that category...you would have to look close at them to see the imperfections....now the front ones, no need to look close...they beg to be replaced...in fact there were 3 wires that had to be unplugged from the harness but in the photo below the top housing only had 2 wires going to the lights , who knows where the 3rd wire went they all pulled out of the black harness covering....the bottom light housing had three wires going to it as well, and the red circle shows that one of the wires had been soldered on to the outside for a ground......they need to be replaced....

and in the back where BUBBA had been.....here is the wiring that he left me...after undoing the black tape it was much easier to sort out...but still not a very good looking job...

just as a side not, my moms family is from the Adirondack region....Massena and Saranac Lake areas....I went back packing with my uncle when I was 12 in the mountains...up Mt Marcy....and that area....really beautiful....slept on one of the mountains at night, bad idea, it was so cold and so windy that I swore that the clouds were going right through my sleeping bag....another night we slept down between mountains and off the trail.....we were right on the mice run and they ran over us all night long......finally we had to leave when it was raining so hard that the shelter we were staying in next to a creek go over run and flooded out.....we were drenched dogs when we got back to the car.....

I also purchased my 61 parking lights from Paragon. Insure you ask if they are imports. My 63 were from Paragon and not the same quality. I believe that Trim Parts makes the better lights.

I hear you Firstgear,

Camping in the Adirondacks is always an adventure. I learned to expect the unexpected. As you stated it is beautiful as is the wilderness in many areas and hiking and camping is a great experience.

My turn signal housing was made by trim parts and the quality was very good.

Trim Parts is who makes the turn signal lamps for all the catalog houses, and they are beautiful quality. Do not even consider having yours rechromed! You can buy a new set with lenses, wiring and gaskets for less than $140. You will spend at least that much having yours redone, and you will not be satisfied with the finished product. The chrome shops almost never bend the anode so that the housing gets full coverage inside the housing.
The result is what is called " nickel shadow" It is where the yellow toned nickel shows down in deep depressions because the Chrome has very bad "throw", and will not go down in holes unless you make a special anode that sticks a leg inside the hole.
