Fuel gauge shuts off?

I have a 98 coupe and the fuel gauge shuts off (goes to empty with the error code on the read out) after about 35 minutes of running the car. Turning the car off will reset it, and it seems to be worse in warm weather. I've heard that this is a problem with these cars, and that the sending unit is inside the tank AND its about a $700.00 fix....any other solutions available???

One of the fuel sender units is acting up. When one starts providing information that is significantly different from the other unit (there are 2 tanks in the C5), the computer notes the problem and the fuel gauge goes to empty - nice way to get your attention.

I have heard of some people recovering full function of the offending sender unit by using a good quality fuel system cleaner - BG 44K or RedLine Fuel System Cleaner were mentioned.

If a good cleaning doesn't work, you'll be replacing one of the sender units. I don't know the cost as the one on my 2003 was replaced under warranty.

HI there,
Techron by Chevron is also a very good cleaner that GM actually recommends to assist in cleaning the sulfur contamination off the fuel sensor. GM part number is 12345104 for the 20 oz bottle.
Also, remember that the drivers side fuel sensor is replaceable by itself.
The passenger side is the entire jet pump and level sensor itself, which is very expensive.
There is also an updated calibration for your engine control computer to also assist in reducing this issue.
You could post your codes that you have and this will tell us more about what you are experiencing.

WElcome to CAC.
Mine did that when I first got it, I make a habit of using only Sunoco 94 or Shell V-power and techron at regular intervales; and I always set the trips when I fill up. Now it does it once in a while on trips when I have to use different gas when the tank is full, once it drops below 1/2 it seems OK
Use good gas and Techron and always set your trips and you can live with it.

C4C5,
The left tank sensor is available, but one cannot get the gasket separately. Unless you know a part number for it. By the way the sensor looks identical to the right side sensor but the float arm is different (but can be switched out)!
Thanks,
Steve
