Fuel Problem

I have a 1998 convertible. Somewhere between 100 and 200 miles into a tank of gas, the computer reads that there is no fuel and the engine shuts down. I simply put in about 5 gallons of fuel and it fires right up! My Chevy dealer read the codes and consulted the tech bulletins. They changed the sending unit and that did nothing. Then, they replaced the right gas tank, but I still have the same problem! Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this problem?

Very interesting problem, at first I would have guessed there was a sending unit problem, but I'm not sure that it would shut down if the sending unit was showing EMPTY I would think it would run until it was actually out of gas. I would say could be a harness issue but since it seems based on mileage that is very odd.. how long after owning the car did this seem to happen? I find it hard to believe you are experianceing this poor of fuel enconomy...

Does the gauge seem to be reading ok like 1/4 or 1/2 full ect.. then it just drops to E?

Welcome to the CAC. I'm sorry your first post has to be regarding a problem with your vette.

There are lots of threads here about fuel gauge problems, but usually it involves the gauge reading empty, not the "out of fuel" condition where your car shuts down. (Try a search using "fuel gauge empty" in the C5 forums). There are also several TSB's here which you might want to check out, but they may be the same ones your dealer consulted.

Did you dealer mention which codes were listed? You might even check the codes (see this thread) to see which ones are in the system. Then hopefully c4c5Specialist will come along with further instructions.

Does adding fuel when it stalls start the car every single time?????
After adding the 5 gallons, how much fuel does it take to fill the car???
Could you please post the part numbers that were replace that are on your receipts????

Agreed- While I've certainly heard of the fuel gauge read-out problem, and that a culprit to that is poor quality gas, I've never heard anyone claim that this results in the car actually shutting down. Man, talk about dangerous.

I'm sorry your first post since joining the CAC last fall has to be about such a sticky problem. I would echo one question that Paul (C4C5Specialist) asked: when you put the five gallons in, and the car fires right up, what does the gas gauge read at that point?

Also, what sort of gas mileage were you typically experiencing in you Corvette before this issue began happening? Was 200 miles on a single tank of gas common or uncommon?
