FInally getting around to replacing the flex line that runs from the hard line from the gas tank to the fuel pump. Had a hose made up from a local shop (US$ 40.00 !!!) because no one seems to sell the correct length hose. I STILL think that maybe my hard line is too long, but that's another issue.

Anyway......getting it all together this morning and I'm just about finished up when I notice gas still running down the flex line. The fuel pump boss is cracked where the fitting from the flex line goes into the pump.

Yeah... I'm a REAL happy guy at this point !!! Run up to a couple local parts stores to see if anyone has a pump that will work; no one does. Then I remember that I've got a pump laying around the house that's been there since I put the crate motor in the car back in '96. I don't think there was anything wrong with it I just replaced it while I was restoring everything else.

My question(s): Is there anyway to tell if this pump is still good ? Will seals and internal gaskets dry up from just sitting for 10 years ? Can I take it apart and swap in the parts from my existing pump with any hope of success ? It seems to have suction where it should and expels air where it should when I work the lever, but I sure don't want to put this pump on just to have to take it off again.

As always, any comments, suggestions, etc... will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bernie O.

Fuel pump diaphragms are hard to destroy. But, I'd be inclined to rebuild it. Some vendors carry kits (try Dr Rebuild: http://tinyurl.com/g8tu6 ), and even your local NAPA might list a kit for it.
If Dr Rebuild catalog is correct, 59 to 66 take the same kit.

Wayne,

Thanks for your reply. I decided to go ahead and take apart the bad pump to see what it looked like inside (nothing to lose with that one). ONce inside I decided it wasn't that big of a deal to swap out the bottom of the other pump; so, in effect, I made one good pump out of two..

Seems to be working fine so far (keeping my fingers crossed); actually seems to start better now, but that could be my imagination.

Thanks,

Bernie O.

Hi Bernie

good job on the fuel pump problem! :)

how long are you in town for?

Saw Dave S. yesterday during a vette club event and he was asking about you. He is going on a trip in a few monthas to San Juan and I think he wanted to check with you to see if you were going to be in PR at the same time.

BTW, the '78 is in the paintshop.......... but it's not at Joe's. it's at another shop.
