I forgot to take pictures of this set-up when I pulled the engine, but I figured I should still publish them to show people something they may not be aware of.

When I first encountered the second filter, it had me, as well as a few others, scratching our heads. One mechanic said he had seen them on C4 Corvettes before, but his employer said he hadn't, nor had my mechanic.

It wasn't long though before I found the reason for the second filter on the return line.
  • Service Bulletin Number: 86234
  • Component: Fuel: Fuel Injection: Unknown type: Accumulator
  • Summary: Fuel return pipe rattle/knock-hammering/knocking type noise -- Caused by pressure pulsatings in fuel system generated by fuel injector operation. -- Repaired by installation of a filter/accumulator assembly in fuel return system. -- Service kits containing parts available from GMSPO - Service Kit P/N - Coupe 10068791 - Convertible 10068797 - All 1985-86 Chevrolet Corvette models.

Evidently someone had the same problem with my '87. ;)

Pictures! The fuel feed line filter is on the left, the return line has the second canister-type filter, pictured on the right.

Shots of where the filters were mounted to the right front frame rail, below the "suitcase." ;)

Out of curiosity, what are you doing differently that will prevent the knocking in your new setup?

The previous owner(s) didn't bother to get this done on mine; it's quite noticeable on cold startups - sounds like someone's tapping a hammer on the frame under the passenger seat. Dealer says the parts aren't available any more... if you've got a different/better solution, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks!

Wow

That's kinda of different....

Leave it to you Ken!

You think that's bad then what is this? It had a makeshift accumulator in there....that big line on top the motor. It had GM stampings on it. Did 94's ever have that problem? I unhooked it and routed the line back to factory fittings.
