fuel guage reads full until there is only 1/2 tank and then it reads correctly. amount of gas and range. are these units repairable or is a new sender the only answer?:r

New sender

Sorry.. it's a wire wound resistor that is tac welded to the fuel pickup tube... just get a new one ( do the fuel pump while your there )

Get the smelling saltz ready ...that sending unit is

$328.73
Electrical, Chassis Electrical, Senders, fuel Gauge Sending Unit, W/O Zr1 Option

If this is correct then Dave probably can't repair but must replace. Compair the cost with what JonM has quoted here.

I'm thinking

WRECKING YARD... $50.00 ish W/O pump.

Check it with an OHM meter BEFORE YOU BUY IT!

0 ohms EMPTY ( short..not OPEN)
90 Ohms ( or less than 200 ) full

visually inspect the wiper & the resistor.

and for GODS SAKE..buy a NEW PUMP & PICK UP SOCK.

And IF you get the type with the little plastic cube up by the filler neck... cut that OUT splice & solder and use SHRINK TUBE.

The CUBE is an RF noise eliminator to make AM less noisy ( from the DC pump ). They break..opening the fuel pump circut.. so no pump! ( BAD GM...BAD )

I bought one from TaberTouch.com for my 86 for $50. Got the entire unit, including pump, sock, etc.
