I just remembered a problem that caused my gas mileage to go way down years ago. There is a small vent hole in the top of the fuel pump. I had a leaky pump diaphram which caused a little gas to be squirted out of that vent hole. It didn't puddle anyplace but my gas mileage dropped terribly.
When I was looking under the hood and reving the engine, I noticed a small spray coming out of the hole. I think when I was driving down the hiway, the gas evaporated so quickly that I didn't see it. I can't explain, (or remember) why I didn't smell the gas. Heck, maybe I did and that's why I was looking under the hood. It was back in 66 or 67!!
