With the HIGH gas prices, has anyone switched brands or grades?I tryed Sunoco mid grade-seems to be o.k.

I haven't Earnest. Can't say that I haven't thought about it though. Actually, I have been running regular in my SC Bonneville for a long time and have not noticed any ill effects. I used to try and alternate premium and regular, but gradually just weaned it off premium altogether. I'm sure that it doesn't have the power running on regular as it does on premium, but we don't really run the car that hard and don't notice it. I do run a bottle of Techron through about every third or fourth tank, mainly to fight the issue of fuel gauge problems.

I was running premium in the 'vette, but I went to mid-grade about a month ago with no ill effects.....I feel terrible depriving my wheels the "good stuff", but it seems to be easing my wallet somewhat.

When I take a long trip regular works fine. The only time you need high octane is over 3000 rpm under hard acceleration. In normal everyday driving I use mid-grade but if I want the full potential of the engine, for autocross, I use 91 octane. We don't have 93 octane here out west. It sure is nice on trips to save 20 cents per gallon.

For the most part I've always run 89 octane in both my C5 & C6 .Most of my driving is below 150 mph and I seldom auto cross and Interstate slalom .

When people say they loose performance it makes me wonder what roads they drive on.

I still run Top Tier gasoline, premium, in my vettes. I run regular in my other vehicles. I tried using mid grade and regular in my 94, but decided that if I have a vette, I might as well spend the money on the recommended fuel. I might run mid grade on my trips to and from CF and the Corvette Museum this year to see how the cars perform. I figure that $0.30 per gallon more for premium costs about $6 more for premium per tank fill up (20 gallons). I find that I fill the tanks of my cars when they drop to 3/4 full. With the way gas prices rise, I try to minimize the shock of filling with more than 5 to 6 gallons at a time.

Thanks everyone!I was just trying to get other peoples ideas on this. The mid grade seems o.k.I have never used regular.Like someone said performance will most likely be down, but I really don't drag race.I just wondered if it would hurt my motor, and for some reason my MPG has dropped off.

Marathon is easy to find in my area and I run their 93 octane. Marathon's "other" brand is Speedway but is only available at 92 octane for their premium. 89 octane is good for the highways for long trips - 300 miles or more - but I haven't tried any regular, ever.

Techron as someone else mentioned is a great additive to keep the fuel gauge working properly!

I use my 2004 Commemorative Convertible as my daily driver. I commute
108 miles round trip everyday.

My Dodge 1500 that I used to drive got 17 mpg, the Vette is getting about
27 mpg consistently.

Typically gas up at about 14 gallons, with a .20 price difference, that
makes a total fill-up cost another $2.80.

I tried running mid grade, and even though I wasn't going 150 mph, when
I hit the accelerator hard, there is a noticeable difference in power
and acceleration.

My mileage has not dropped a bit .If you read your owners manual I think you'll find that 87 and 89 are acceptable .But check you manual it's in there somewhere. Your computer will adjust to different octanes .:)

Lets look at the savings in real dollars .The difference for each grade jump is about 10 cents a gallon .I drive my cars about 30,000 miles and get about 28 mpg as my driving is mostly highway .The savings is about $100 per year ,not as much as one would think .

Thank you for better articulating what I was trying to say :L

Was I articulating ? I'm sorry ,it won't happen again.;LOL

Yea, watch it vett boy......you had better not be doing that here.:chuckle

In Colorado, the difference between grades is $0.15; that means that premium is $0.30 a gallon more than regular. The real problem is not the difference between the grades, but the base price we have to pay. To go from $1.75 last fall to almost $4 is the problem that we all face, but at least we are not waiting in line for hours to get 10 gallons at a time. I thought we won those wars in Kawait and the Saudia Arabians were our friends. Oh well, I guess we have to be grateful for somethings, like CF in Effingham this year.

I'M GLAD I CAN AFFORD TO BUY TOP TIER GAS :happyanim:

It's good to know that I can safely use a lower grade-but my dic screen says about 17 mpg when before it was about 26mpg.Could that be the gas or something else? The car runs fine.:confused

Is that the average or instantaneous fuel economy read-out? Either way, you're not going to get much better than 17-18 mpg in city driving conditions; you need to get out on the highway to get 26+ mpg.

A 9 mpg drop doesn't make sense to me .Mine never dropped a bit .Both Junkie and I routinely hit high marks of 32-33 mpg highway with our C5's.Junkie runs 87 and I ran 89 octane .

Florida is famous for spiking gas with water since ethanol ,watch where you buy your gas .
