Tom,

Changing the gas gauge sending unit in the tank, is what I think your asking about. It will involve removing the gas tank to acess it. Are you certain that the sending unit is bad? Many stop working correctly due to broken/loose/corroded wiring or lost ground than actually fail.

dale,

on the 73 the sending unit is on the bottom of tank, i took off the spare tire holder and i can get to it, i checked the ground & its ok,when i take the boot off the gauge goes to full.

Tom,
Okay, looks as if you have found the sending unit. The biggest problem is that you will have to drain the tank. You cannot do this by just disconnecting the rubber feed line as the unit in the tank goes upward to about mid tank and then back down to the bottom, so you would be left with half a tank of gas. You would need to either pump the gas out of the top or suction it out of the botton feed line. Otherwise you will get a gas bath when you remove the sender. Once the tank is empty, the sending unit is very easy to change out. It is held in by a circular retaining ring. Just rotate the ring until it come loose, then work the sending unit out. Slip in the new one, use a new gasket, and put the retaining ring back on. That is it.

On the gas issue, you could run the car until it was basicly empty, then take the tank straps loose and raise one end of the tank so the gas flows to the other end. Then change the unit.
