Hello,

I'm putting a new gas tank in a '63 coupe. I'm having difficulty getting the straps far enough around the tank to mount the bolts on the cross support.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

I would think your's is the same as mine (I have a 1966 convertable)

When I installed my new quanta tank.I had purchased all the needed material from ZIP products.

1-new gaskets for filler, new rubber for around filler neck, new screws.new over flow hose and nipple, new tank strainer, new straps and hardware, new insulators.
What I had found out was that the new straps were defective in that they where manufactored wrong .If you compare the originals with the replacements they are different in the way they are bent. May not be the case with all of them but my set were incorrect. I cleaned up my old ones and reused them.I also slightly increased the bend where they connect in the front just a tweek and I was able to reconnect them with no problem..

Are you using the reproduction straps?

I'm also using a Quantum tank with all new hardware. I bent the new straps the same way the old ones were bent. The problem I'm having is that the bolts seem to be too short preventing me from inserting them through the holes in the support to put a nut on to which the straps can then be tightened down. I'm going to try longer bolts in the hopes that I can insert them through the holes and pull down the straps, via the nut, tight against the tank. If I have any clearance problems with the longer bolts I'll cut them off to fit.

Did you compare the new straps to the old ones?

I also dont know how to describe this but I had to wiggel/finess the straps/tank to get them to settle together so the strap is flush tight against the tank(not just on the top but towards the rear and front where the strap settles into that indent.

I almost think if you use the longer bolts to settle it into the correct spot once you pull it down snug you should be able to remove the longer bolts and then reinstall the correct bolts.

Are you sure they are all the way pulled up tight in the rear where they go thru that loop section. That would put you off by atleast a 1/4" lenght you have to kind of just pull the straps foward-then push the tank back

I used 1" longer bolts and was able to pull the straps down tight. I was going to remove them and put the correct bolts back but I decided to cut off the longer bolts down and tighten everything up. I now notice that the filler neck and cap on the coupe is further forward and not centered in the opening. I can get the gas cap on and off but the rubber boot doesn't fit properly. I'll go back tomorrow and see if there is any adjustments so that I can get it closer to being centered. I did notice that the loop section where the staps mount into the slot in the frame didn't seem to fit snuggly. I tried tapping it in with a hammer and piece of wood but it wouldn't go any further. The other thing I want to double check is the adjustment between the nut and the keeper which the Assembly Manual says it should be .87" gap. That might also help with the alignment of the filler neck.

Thanks,
Mike

There should be an tin elbow that supports the strap end where the screws are placed....have you got that in place or is it missing ?

Yes, I have the retainer, which I beleive is the part you're referring to, in place. I'm going to try and shim the front of the tank where it comes in contact with the cross member in hopes that they will help align the filler neck properly.

IH2LOSE,
From your picture, it looks like that you have "anti-squeak" pads under your straps. Is that factory correct? Do you think it is helpful/necessary?
Do you have a picture of the gas tank filler neck relative to the opening in the deck?
Thanks

Yes I can post a picture of the filler area.

As for the anti rattles as far as I know it is factory correct I would be afraid to install them with out it.they are on the staps and then under the tank where it meets the frame

Thanks for the picture. I finally got the gas tank back together tonight and the fit is ok. I'm used to the roadster which the gas cap seems to be better centered under the gas lid door. Oh, by-the-way I didn't put anti squeak strips under the tank straps, too late now. Good idea though!
