hey guys was picking up my son from football and my 73 vette just dies pop the hood the clear gas filter was empty ok so my other kid brings a gas can from home put in about 3 gals it started right up went to get gas it only took 9 gals so its only a 12 gal tank yes or no seems a bit small.

I thought C3s had 20 gal. tanks..
No, I do not think the gas tank is very large. From the few times I've actually put more than a half tank, 12-15 gallons seems about right.

I wonder if your fuel line and vent line might be crossed at the tank?
Has this ever happened before?

I found some information about exact replacement and it says it is 20 gallons

18-20 gallons should fill it, depending upon year. Some of these tanks have liners in them which can collapse and result in a less than normal fill.

:)

I believe the 68-74 tanks should hold 18 gallons but this is one area that has long be debated. The 75-79? hada bladder inside the tank that will collapse from age and close off space in the tank. The early tanks have the sender in the tank bottom and the later tanks have it on top. Any chance someone switched them in the past? I have never tried this myself so I don't even know if they'll fit but a quick look at the tank bottom will tell.
Quantum is the place that makes then now so you can call them as well for info.

Lastly, if you're running a glass filter I would replace it with a steel fuel line and inline metal or aluminum filter. Those glass filters and rubber hoses are the cause of engine fires.

I know for sure that the 75-77 had them not sure about the later models although; the replacement fuel tanks say that the bladder is not required. The reason a bladder collapses is from keeping a car stored or out of service with a less then full fuel tank for an extended period of time. Once a bladder dries out it is un-repairable. I haven’t tried it but have heard that if a bladder does collapse and is not dried out it can be removed cleaned inside and out and wiped down real good inside and out with 30W motor oil and reinstalled.
