Gas Tank

I have a '74 Coupe that I just purchased. A strong gas smell can be detected when I fill the tank and also make right turns. Noticed a small amount of gas after a right turn near the left rear wheel. I have replaced the gas cap with a NOS cap and installed the rubber sleeve over the opening. Any suggestions?

Check the plumbing that goes to the vapor recovery canister. There is a connection at the top of the tank on the drivers side. The rubber fuel line there may be rotted away. Will need to remove the spare tire carrier and cover, then you should be able to reach it up above the muffler at the top part of the tank. There is a black plastic box there that is to return liquid to the tank and let vapor go on to the recover canister at the left of the engine. Bet that hose between the tank and that box is rotted or split.
