Gasoline Odor?

After cruising an hour or so, I get intermittent whiffs of gasoline odor. Last time when I got home, I sniffed around and found it was originating at the gas cap. I know it is supposed to hold pressure and it seems to do that, as evidenced by the release of pressure when I open it at fill-up time.

But, does the gasoline odor mean the cap is going bad, or is this a normal occurence experienced by all?

Thanks!!

I can't say whether it means yours is going bad, but I never smell whiffs of gasoline odor from mine.

Does your gas cap depressurize when you open it? It should.

I'd lift up the rubber boot (or whatever it's called) under the fuel door and check the gasket sealing the pump assembly to the tank is OK. Also check the lines connected to the tank.

If you're sure it's at that end that is? I'd have a good look round the fuel rails and where the lines connect into the fuel rails, particluarly just after starting (so the fuel gets up to pressure but before the engine gets hot - safer that way!)

My car briefly had a small leak from the valve (where you'd connect a fuel pressure gauge) on the passenger side fuel rail. Scared the life out of me! Just needed tightening up and it's ok now. Could have been disastrous on a hot engine!
