I have this friend who took his LT4 up to 155mph :D last week on a wide, good, flat, straight stretch of road with no one around last week. It was still climbing in 5th gear when he had to shut it down. In fact, near the end the mph was still jumping on the gauge by 2-3 mph. Last he glanced the tach was at 5.5k and I'm assuming it was closer to 6 near the end of the run. At what point, or at all, do you shift to 6th for top speed?

Switch to 6th gear? I would say when ever the car and the driver are ready for it. However, with that said it would be a good idea to see what the gear ratios are for that Corvette.

1st - 2.64
2nd - 1.78
3rd - 1.3
4th - 1.00
5th - 0.74
6th - 0.49

So as you can see, it is a good drop into 6th. I am sure that he had fun running it up to 155mph, but what is the reason he "had to shut it down."?

5th gear is your top speed gear, 6th gear cannot overcome drag at top end.

Here's a rather lengthy thread on that subject: Stock LT4 Top Speed

Later . . . . . .

...this is true - I know of only one model Corvette to obtain its top speed in 6th rather than 5th

Hmmmm ..... SNAT by chance?

:w

Keep her in 5th for top speed, 6th for highway cruising.

Thanks for the replies.

Ripp 76 - The car that was a spec on the horizon was coming up fast, as well as a small town.
