BELOW IS THE RESPONSE I HAD FROM DEPT. OF TRANS., U.S. .THOUGH, THIS IS NOT THE QUESTION I HAVE ASKED, IT IS INFORMATIVE NONETHELESS. I MYSELF HAVE REQUESTED REDRESS TO MY SPECIFIC SITUATION.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Q; Are There Any Limitations on My Right to Have My Vehicle Remedied at No Charge?

A: Yes.
There is a limitation based on the age of the vehicle. In order to be
eligible for free remedy, the vehicle cannot be more than 10 years old on
the date the defect or non-compliance is determined. Under the law, the age
of the vehicle is calculated from the date of sale to the first purchaser.
For example, if a defect is found in 2003 and a recall ordered,
manufacturers are required to make the correction available at no charge
only to cars purchased new in 1994 through 2003. However, consumers should
realize that even though manufacturers are not obligated to remedy safety
defects in older cars, a safety problem may still exist. If you receive
notification of a defect on a vehicle older than 10 years, take the
responsibility to have your car repaired at your own expense. Eliminate any
unnecessary safety risks.
Also, if the manufacturer challenges the agency's final decision of a
safety defect, there is no obligation to remedy the defect while the case
is in court. If you decide to take your vehicle in for correction after the
agency's decision is made but before the case is finally decided and the
court decides that the defect is not safety-related, Federal law does not
require that the manufacturer reimburse you for the repair work. However,
if the court upholds NHTSA's final decision, you may be entitled to
reimbursement. Be sure to save all receipts and paperwork so that you can
prove the repairs were made.

I wonder how I can find a list of recalls for the 1996 LT1? Would be interesting to know what GM should have fixed, if anything.

I don't believe theres a statute of limitations on safety recalls. My 88 was under a seatbelt recall that I had performed at no charge to me two years ago. In 2003 my car was already 15 years old.

Have you tried searching our Tech Center? It includes our Knowledge Base with links to a search engine which should list all recalls.

WELL, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO TELL YOU OTHER THEN I ASKED ABOUT A SPECIFIC RECALL ON MY 88 AND WHAT I GOT IN RETURN WAS WHAT I STARTED THE THREAD WITH. APARENTLY, IF YOU CHOOSE TO RELY ON THE RESPONSE I RECEIVED AND POSTED, THEN IT'S THE LAW. I MYSELF HAVE TAKEN MY "CONCERNS" VIA CERTIFIED MAIL TO THE HEAD MAN OF GM AND AM WAITING FOR A RESPONSE. I HAD STATED THAT IF ANYONE GETS KILLED OR INJURED, THERE WILL BE COPIES OF THE GM RECALL NOTICE IN MY CAR AS WELL AS AT HOME WITH INSTRUCTIONS FOR MY FAMILY/FRIENDS TO FURNISH COPIES TO ANYONE-EVERYONE INVOLVED SHOULD THERE BE CONTEMPLATED LITIGATION.

Go to your local Chevy dealer with the campaign number for the recall along with your vin #. They can tell if the work has been done or not. In your case perhaps it's already been performed and you're getting a form letter. All I can tell you here is what I was both told by the dealer and had PERFORMED by the dealer.

Go to this link and fill out the registration info page.

Dear Mr. XXXX,

Thank you for contacting the Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center; I appreciate the time you have taken to write to me regarding recalls on your 1998 Chevrolet Corvette.

I have processed the information provided and have found two open recalls on your vehicle. A Chevrolet dealer has not completed repairs for the following recalls, according to our system. Please see your dealer as soon as possible to have these recalls completed at no cost to you. The details of the recalls follow:

Recall 04006 - Electronic Column Lock System

General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 1997 model year Chevrolet Corvette vehicles with electronic column lock (ECL) systems. When you turn your ignition switch to lock the system prevents turning of the steering system. When you start your vehicle, it unlocks the steering system. Your vehicle is designed so that if the column fails to unlock when you start your car, the fuel supply will be shut off if you try to move your vehicle. If voltage at the powertrain control module is low or interrupted, however, the fuel shut off may not occur and the vehicle can be accelerated while the steering system is locked. If this occurs, a crash could occur without warning.

Recall 00034 - Lap Belt Webbing Twisted

General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1997-2000 Chevrolet Corvette model vehicles. Some of these vehicles exhibit a condition in which the lap belt webbing may twist, allowing the webbing to become jammed in the retractor. When the belt webbing becomes jammed in the retractor, the belt may be unusable. In a vehicle crash, an unbelted occupant may receive more severe injuries.

If you were not already working with a dealership another option you may choose to pursue would be to contact your dealership of choice for assistance. http://www.gm.com/automotive/vehicle_shopping/dealer_locator/. You may search for your preferred dealer by the dealer name, the city and state or by your zip code. If the dealer is unable to assist, contact the Customer Assistance Center at the number provided below or feel free to write us again.

If you should need to contact us in the future, simply reply to this message or call our Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-222-1020. Customer Relationship Managers are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., Eastern Time. YES, I (WE) ARE AWARE OF THIS PROCEEDURE HOWEVER, 2 DEALERSHIPS HAVE SAID THAT THEIR COMPUTERS ONLY GO BACK APPROX. 10 YEARS MAKING DISCOVERY OF THE REQUESTED INFORMATION IMPOSSIBLE. I ASKED THE DEALER WOULD THEIR COMPUTER SHOW IF A REPAIR HAD BEEN DONE AND THE REPLY WAS "YES".

ARMED WITH THAT INFORMATION, I CONTACTED GM CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE/SUPPORT AND THEY HAD INFORMED ME THAT (IN MY CASE) THERE WERE ONE OR TWO ITEMS THAT WERE "OPEN". I ASKED IF A PARTICULAR ITEM HAD BEEN REPAIRED AND SHE KEPT ELUDING TO THE ONE OR TWO ITEMS THAT SHOWED OPEN WHICH WAS NOT THE INFORMATION I WAS SEEKING. THUSLY, THE AFOREMENTIONED LETTER TO TO THE HEAD OF GM.

**well, your vehicle is only a few years old. there are vehicles that exceed the 10 year benchmark as previously stated. this is where all the problems are starting as to how far back the computer(s) will go and the salient question; "as to if the computer does not show a repair, does it mean it has been repaired and where is the proof that gm has actually fixed it". having been told that a listed recall is meerly not appearing is not proof that it was ever repaired and that gm may not want to actually go through the expense of repairing "it".

Then if you are getting that much of a run around, I'd say you're taking the right approach. Personally? I think that "10 years" only on the computer is a crock of sh**. I hope it gets resolved to your satisfaction...

I guess the only way to be sure is to look at your wheels to verify missing welds, replace the rear tie rods, and get some new seat belt retractors.

I know you are concerned about possible outstanding defects. We all would be.
But maybe you should reexamine your motives. It sounds like some of your concern is because of the principle of the thing.
It makes no sense to be confrontational. Nor is it wise to wait until an accident occurs and then try to force the company into action. I agree with wishuwerehere in the above quote. Check the wheels, etc and repair/replace what is needed for you own safety and the safety of others. You can still pursue redress from GM.
Take it or leave it, this is my advice and opinion.

not a big deal so far but will "leave it" respectfully since i have the choice (grin). my motives are..... well, i have no motives except that i do not like to be blown off when i ask a question of a major conglomerate or governmental department. yes, i may be able to fix or examine some of the recall items and fix them if they exist but then, i am faced with more of a monumental task of getting my money reimbursed! ever try that? i am sure that there are owners out here whom have tried to get reimbursement for many things and found that it was like roller skating up a hill of ice. i tried to be nice and corgial (spelling?) to the entities i have spoken with but, when i could not get a straight and definitive answer, found that it is time to wake someone up by example and not by threat. i also agree with a previous response that the 10 years on the computer is a bunch of "sloppy wet fertilizer". thusly, i put my head down and CHARGE!

well, i hope so. it seems that the harder i push and back "them" into a corner, the more evasive they get. at the end of all of this i can say that i tried to the best of my ability. there are a few of us out there whom have been given the run-a-round or whom have been blown off in the "recall circus". i intend to not be one of them. it will give me great pleasure that if my being "pushy" to gm gets not only my problem solved but, maybey someone else's whom has been blown off, i can say i made a contribution to this forum. now, will someone help me off of my soap box?
