Was getting high voltage (17 volts) from old alternator. Blowing turn signal fuse and bubbling the battery...
Thought I had a bad internal voltage regulator. Just installed new 85 amp alternator and am experiencing the exact same problem. Anybody had a similar problem or any suggestions? Could this be a short frying the voltage regulator right away? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How about the sense wire? There's a plug with 2 wires going to the alternator. One wire goes to the wiring harness and ultimately the battery and is the voltage sense. The regulator uses it to determine how much to charge the battery. If you unplug this connector (engine off), you should get 12V on the pin.

I am getting 12.06 volts from this lead. However, this connector has been previously rewired. Looks like plug used to be on fender side of alternator, but now is on the engine block side of alternator and previous owner needed another 6 inches of wire. Could he have reversed the wires in the plug and would this cause this kind of problem?
Should the +12V input go into the #1 or the #2 lead on the alternator?
Right now it (the green wire) goes to the #2 lead on the alternator.

turns out I had a very bad battery that was messing up the electrical system
new battery, no problem
could all the problems be this simple? life would be grand
