Getting the "Right" Exhaust

I'm sure this thread has been out here before, but... I'd like to get opinions of what you guys and ladies think is the best sounding exhaust for the LT1. I recently adopted "My Other Car" and it came with the mufflers replaced with straight pipes from the catalytic converters back. While this sounds nice cruising at 70+, around town it has a lot of excessive noise and burbling while decelerating (in my humble opinion). I'm looking for a deep, throaty rumble commensurate with what people would expect from a Vette. This replacement will be one of my winter projects, so I have a while to get it right. Borla maybe??, Flowmasters?

I'm partial to the Magnaflow SS Exhaust. You can get them for a very reasonable price w/ free shipping from performancepeddler.com and they sound awesome, look great and no burbling-backfiring or any of that @#$! Also very easy to install. Made my car sound and look mean:cool

An "Exhausting" question...

"Best Sounding" exhaust is such a subjective term... Everybody's tastes are different, some like it at 8.4 on the Richter Scale, while others like it quiet.

I've installed and built several different systems on various platforms (C2,C3,C4,C5) and can tell you this: If it's a mellow rumble you're looking for, try the Dynomax Super Turbos (direct replacement with choice of tips). If you're looking for a more "authoritative" tone, try Flowmasters (but interior resonance is an issue). For a flat-out "take no prisoners" tone, try Twisters. Somwhere in the middle lies Magnaflow and Borla. Also note... if you're so inclined, try either an H-pipe or a Tru-X crossover pipe to both damper exhaust tone and to pick up a bit of low-end torque. The key here is to be proficient with a welder, or find a COMPETENT exhaust/performance shop with access to a bender for installation. You can also try the various catbacks out there if you're looking for a DYI type of upgrade. My personal opinion is to use a mandrel bent system (I scratch fab or modify those on a "personal, by the vehicle" basis), as opposed to a compression bender, but if you're not planning future upgrades, compression bent is fine. Good luck in your search.

For the vette I went with B&B I love the sound, quiet while driving but throaty rumble when accelerating. The only drawback is the resonation in the vehicle during this acceleration. The accoustics in the car cause it to sound louder than it is. For all my 4X4s I vote Borla, you can't go wrong with a Borla exhaust system.

That just means that you're minimum speed should be 75mph. :L

My neighbor says that in the morning, he can tell that I'm leaving because of the "rumble." He even exaggerates by saying, "I'm in the can and I can hear you through all those walls." Too much information!

My suggestion would be to get the Flow Masters. I have them on my 98 Chevy pickup(American Thunder) & 39 Chevy hotrod (40 series). I'm redoing an 85 Vette and it's going to get them too. Just remembr that the 40 series has an interior resonance at certain rpm's. I got use to the noise and have to say I love it. There's a guy somewhere in these pages that has a Borla for sale. He said it was too loud...

I am on my second set of Flowmasters, because I needed bigger ones or this engine and I liked the first set. Obnoxious is not how I choose to label them; not in the least.

BTW, I have a pair of used Flowmasters that are attached to a rear Y-pipe. The stock '84 and '85 are the same.

I sure would like to them leave the premises!!

the 85 has Magaflows, really on the quiet side, nice rumble, freeflow, sounds really cool when I back off and come down to the 1400 rpm range. I think it was in the $500 buck range for the mufflers and the tips installed at a local shop.

I think the tips look the best of any that they make for a c4 & I love the sound (and NO resonance).

The LT4 emblem was on the car when I got it. They are available from several catalog companies like Eklers, Mid America, etc.

Froggy47....After seeing your emblem I did a little search and found them at Ecklers so I ordered one. I agree w/ you on the tips althogh IMHO my Magnaflow SS run a close second and they were considerably cheaper. It was tough enough to convince the little woman that I "needed" new exhaust, let alone 1000.00 worth of it, so the Magnaflow got the nod at 320.00 shipped. They do look alot like yours but the tips are straight w/ dual 3 1/2" outlets. Probably the best mod I've done to the car yet! See ya
