The later 4th gen ( 95 and 96 ) vettes, when factory equipped with the runflat tires, had an aluminum box structure that was installed in place of the rear tire (presumably for rear impacts?).

The earlier models (like my 91) had a completely different rear frame and bumper structure. It is safe, from a rear impact or other standpoint, to just remove the spare tire on my 91?

I would highly suggest that you do not remove the spare tire from your '91 unless you are using it due to a flat tire situation.

If you are going to remove the spare, I suggest you install the brace for it. The spare is part of the rear impact safety structure.
Try calling Jeff Koop or Chris at Superior Chevrolet. 800-728-8267
I think they go for 165.00

Wow! I did not know that the spare tire was part of the rear impact safety!

Thanks for the info Rob and Jon!

Rob - I assume this means that GM never rear crash tested the earler C4s without the spare?

Jon - Happen to have a photo of how the rear of the impact bar attaches to the rear aluminum bumper support? The earlier C4s have a different structure there, so I would have to fabricate something.

Unfortunately, I can't answer that. I have more information on this subject buried deep in my closet, but it would take me quite a while to dig it out.
