So I have been trying to buy this '85 for a few months now. It is black and has been sitting for a year, but under the inch of dirt is a nearly mint car. However the old lady who owns cannot find the damn keys to the car. So we called the local Chevy dealer who said they won't cut keys for a vehicle older than '87!

Is this true? If so is my only option to call an automotive locksmitch? I have no clue what to do here...

Its an 85, so it has no vats. Any locksmith should be able to cut with no problem. All they have to do is take the lock out and they can change the tumblers to any cut you want. Had mine done on my 84 cause I lost the only key I had.

Will they at least give you the numbers (with proof of ownership) so a locksmith can cut the key?

We brought the title and all her ID's with us to the dealer, and they said nothing before '87. So I guess the locksmith it is! Thanks guys!

Did she atleast drop those little punch out things with the cut number on into the glove box? She's got to have the key number there someplace. Any good bonded locksmith can cut a new one from those.

Does she have the build sheet in the vehicle? The key numbers might be on those, at the very least then they can cut one blind...

Look at a buck and a quarter or up to two to get a new lockset installed, then you need new locks for the doors and the glove compartment.

My local Chevy dealer just cut a key for my 86 last week...cost $20 'cause of VATS, but wth///
