I have some work to do on the interior console, replace the trim plate, the panels, etc. Do you think it's in my best interest to take out the seat(s)? The panel is somewhat hard to get at with them in, but will that be more hassle than necessary?

Thanks! :D

Took mine out when I did the same... it just seemed easier from the start. Plus... I found a $5 bill and a long lost ring!

I have done it both ways on my 78. The hard part is getting the side carpet off. Once that is done the rest is not bad. To get the side panels off there are two screws that need to be removed. One is just about at the seat back hinge and a little hard to get at. sliding the seat forward all the way and then fold the seat-back forward and you can get at it.

Then once the side panels are off slide the seat to the rear and you can get to everything else. I like having the passenger side seat out just for comfort, but that is just me. If you remove the seats is just give you more room to work. This is a good time to clean the carpet under the seats and lube up the tracks if you remove the seats.

It not that hard either way, So good luck.

So taking the seats out is no real big deal? Just four bolts, right?

WELL, YES, Just four bolt on each side; IF they come out easily. I'd spray some WD 40 on them from the bottom before starting. These bolts are known to be a bit rusty at times.

Seat bolts...

Here is a secret: You can't remove the bolts from underneath the car! Those aren't nuts, they are welded in!

I spent like 5 minutes trying to turn them. :o

Wait a second. I'm confused now. How would you get them out then? :confused

Its just 4 bolts, 2 in the front and 2 in the back. You take them out from the top. Moving your seat all the way back makes it eaiser to get the front 2, and move it all the way forward to get to the back 2. Its not that hard to do.

Okay, I'll have a look and see if I can't do it. Thanks! :D

Very easy to do....unless they're rusted.

I'll just blast them with some WD-40 before I start wrenching them out.

When I redid my seats, I had to use a liquid wrench on the nuts because they where pretty rusty. Only two of them had the nut welded onto the floorboard, the other two had a nut that unscrewd completly. The liqid wrench should do the work just fine let it penetrate the screws for a hour then try to remove them hope this helps

Liquid wrench? Sounds like something I'll need to borrow. :)

A 78 should be pretty easy. The hardest part on mine was the pass-thru seatbelts. What a pain! You have to heatup the sleaves witha hair dryer.

They always get chewed up too.

liquid wrench is a chemical solvent that you can purchase at an auto-parts store. (maybe even Walmart)

You squirt it on the rusty bolt or nut, then let it sit awhile. It seeps into the threads and help to loosen it up.

I was told that the pass. side seat bolts are on top, but the drivers side you get from under the car...at least on a '78, not true??? Both sides bolts are on top...

Okay. I just look at the Assembly manual. Shouldn't be too big of a deal, provided they are rusted in there and come out fairly easy. :)
