I just bought an 01 with a 6 speed (sold my '94 - what an improvement!!!) The car is almost new (2800 mi). When starting in first gear, I hear a gravelly sound, more pronounced when going uphill (like my driveway). I've read that it is documented as a problem, but I'm wondering what causes the problem? Transmission? Baffle in the exhaust? The car sat for a while so maybe something in the exhaust rusted? I'm wondering what causes it and can it be fixed? Thank you for any comments and help you can provide.

That sound you hear is normal for a manual tranny. I was concerned about it too; but, I watched the owner's video that came with my car and it pointed out that the sound is normal.

It is also there when starting out at low speed in other gears too.

HI there,
This is called a neutral gear rattle and this is completely normal due to resonance through the driveline.
I would be more worried if I did NOT hear it.

In fact, if you were able to get the CD or VCR instructions, GM has indicated in there that this is indeed normal - something to do with the tight clearances of all that equipment in that "little" space....

I'm thinking it has more to do with the particular design of the drive-train components used on the C5's. I've gotten used to it a long time ago, but I understand how someone new to a C5 MM6 might be a bit un-nerved at first.

Yes, it is actually very loud when going up hill. My driveway is steep and because there is a lip on the pavement at the bottom, I have to come to a full stop before starting up. The noise is quite loud, especially when the car is warmed up. But as you and others have done, I'll sceen it out...small price to pay for such a sweet ride...

Not just exclusive to the C5. The six speeds in the C4 had some of it too. My father's 57 Chevy 3 speed even had the very same noise in 1957. Sounds like the gears. No problem though.
Have a nice day. :)
