My 03 vette grinds when shifting from 1st to 2nd and sometimes 2nd to 3rd. I dropped it off at the dealer today and they "could not duplicate the problem". Are these transmissions hard and knotchy when shifting? The car only has 14,000 miles on it but the warranty runs out soon so I wanted it corrected if it was a problem.

Any knowledgeable input would be appreciated.

Mine was from new!! I complained at 2200 miles and the dealer blew me off!! It will get worse! They just fixed mine at 25890 miles and the 2nd. gear itself was bad and not the synchronizer but they replaced all synchronizers bearings and 2nd gear!! And yes the shifter Sucks!! :upthumbs http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77419&page=2

Pretty poor quality for such an expensive car. Maybe if the trany was Japaneese it would shift better:)

No, not really.
First, the transmissions will take as much as 10000 miles to break in the frictional surfaces of the syncronizer cones. Were you told this?? Carbon composition frictional surfaces are extremely long lasting, based on a 200000 mile durability testing. BUT, it takes some time to bed them in so that they work well. A simple fluid change to Redline D4 ATF can assist, as the additives package has a different coefficient of friction, therefore can slow the spindown rate of the transmission syncronizers.
Second, shifter adjustments are critical, and should be performed first. Were you told this and was it done to your car???
Third, ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS IS KEY to effectively determine if there is a problem and how to address it.
I would suggest you find someone who is intimate with the T56 before condemning the transmission as poor quality.

No,
No and no.
By bringing the car to a GM dealer i should be guaranteed that intimacy. I did however ask which dealer was the best in the area and even requested a specific mechanic who is supposed to be very 'intimate' with corvettes.

I was under the impression that a change to Redline D4 would affect my warranty.

I guess 'poor quality' might have been too strong. I should have said based on the number of complaints on this and other forums, the need to change parts to aftermarket for better performance, and my own experiences the T56 possesses qualities of a poorly made transmission.

Hi there,
Redline D4 ATF is classified as Dexron 3 automatic transmission fluid.
This is perfect for your transmission. As long as Dexron 3 is added, your warranty would NOT be in jeopardy.
Plus, in my service stable in the North east, I have at least 15 T56, both MM6 and M12 with over 100000 miles with NOT ONE problem. They do NOT all run Redline, but some do.
There are some issues based on driving habits of the owners, sure, but as I say, accurate diagnosis is key.
