Grounding Temp Switch

Hello all;
Living out here in hot southern Arizona makes it near impossible to cool a vette down once it reaches that "kick on" stage mediated by the temp switch. So, for the 84 I had, I simply grounded this wire making it so the fans ran all the time. No problem.

However, now with this 90, I'm trying to do the same thing and it isn't working. Can someone enlighten me as to why? Is there a second something or other that has to be tripped to override the system? Something in the relay perhaps or a second switch somewhere else? I'm only messing with the wire that goes to the switch in the passenger side head... is there another one on a 90?

I believe your messing with the gauge sender. Try your other head
They switched sides in 85 or 86

MAX, you are brutal :L chevyaddict, you have to tie into the main fan as well. Ecklers and them sell kits, but you can do it yourself. I'm just running the aux. fan by switch, and I can't recall how it's done for both.

The sensor you are working with controls the temp guage in the dash. To short the realys for the fans on a '90 I jumpered a switch to ground then ran the other lead to the fan relays. They are on the side of the radiator housing near the drivers headlight. If you ground the blue and white wire the fan should come on. This is for one of the fans the other should be the same location, same wire (different color ... can't remember). I jumpered the two wires together then ran that back to a switch I temporarily installed in the interior. When ever the temp started getting too high just flip the switch and both fans would come on.

I have a switch hooked to just the auxillary fan. This will cool the engine in 90 deg + temp without the main fan running. Both relays are on the drivers side right against the radiator.

I know I will catch a lot of **** for saying this, but I will say it anyway.

Run either a 160 t-stat or a 180. I have been running a 160 in my CE LT4 since it was new. You have ridden in my vette. Runs a cool temp and runs great! There are those out here you will swear that a t-stat has nothing to do with how hot an engine runs. Well, hate to differ (not really) but after working on cars for almost 35 years...........

I absolutely agree about the thermostat... but out here in the summer that isn't the issue. The issue is that the fans don't turn on soon enough... and then when the car is hot in 100 degree whether with the air conditioning running it will NOT cool off fast enough. Car got up to 240 degrees or more and in that kind of heat... your done. By making the fans just run all the time, it never reached those high temperatures.... at least the 84 didn't. This car stays pretty cool except for those days in mid town - by the time the fans came on it was too late. Fan motors themselves are pennies and lifetime warranty anyway so it makes no difference to have them run all the time. Thanks all for the input; I'll be wiring her up this weekend!

One thing to check out is the relays. One may be bad. Going by your previous post. With the AC on the Aux fan should be on (I think this is the one on the pass side) either that or you may have some other issues. The AC switch signals the ECM to turn on the aux fan, actually its a good thing to know. With older cars if you started overheating I was taught to turn on the heater, with these cars its just the opposite ... turn on the AC.
