Has anyone had this issue in the cold only?

Hey guys, maybe i am a moron, but I am having the same problem. Just started. I would like to do this fix, just have a couple questions.
Which way to the slits have to run? How deep are they made?

I used my Dremel tool with small round sanding discs and made the slits go around the inside of the grommet. Like going around the bar. If you make the slits from side to side the lube will leak out. I cut mine about 1/8" and made 4 cuts.
