problem one, can I disconnect the cold start injector? problem two, can I plug the EGR port and remove the valve? Just wondering what kind of problems I would cause with the computer doing these things. Does anyone have one running that I could talk to?
If I recall correctly on the EGR it will throw a code (SES Light) and cause your car to run rich I believe. At least that is what my local Mr. Goodwrench told me. I had asked about this when I installed my TPIS Bigmouth intake. Not sure about your cold start injector. Logic dictates it could cause a nasty hard start problem. I'm sure someone more knowledgable than myself can verify if I'm right. Good Luck to you.
I'm in the process of installing a SuperRam on my 86, and can answer these for you.
1. You can disconnect the cold-start injector and the only problem you'll have is that it'll crank more when first starting. The CSI is directly connected to one of the temp sensors at the front of the manifold under the throttle body - no ECU involvement at all. If you get a new chip, you can have it burned to pulse all 8 injectors more when starting; this makes starting easier.
If you need a CSI blockoff, you can order them from a couple places online including Street and Performance (and darned if I can remember their URL - www.hotrodinc.com or something).
2. If you plug the EGR port, but leave the valve connected, you won't throw a code. Haven't removed the valve, but with the port plugged and the sensor disconnected, I didn't see a need. EGR is only used when the car is first started (and is cold) and for emissions purposes. Again, if you have a chip burned (which you should with a SuperRam) you can have EGR functions removed/compensated for.
Tell me more about your setup - what other parts are going in?
rrubel,
I know this may be a late post, but I need help deciding whether to buy an ACCEL Super Ram on ebay. From what I've read, it is not a simply replacdemant of the stock TPI. I'm concerned about hooking up the fuel rails, whether the stock computer will "adjust": to it, and how much it will help performance w/stock heads and cam. The seller claims 5800 rpm w/it. Surely the cam and heads will restrick that. My car is a stock '89 L98 ragtop. Any advice and technical nfo would be appreciated. Thanks.
Rich
Cam and heads will DEFINITELY restrict you. If you're not planning on running a better cam, I'd pass it up. Not sure how the stock chip would handle it; I've gotten a custom one.
It is, however, essentially a stock-part replacement. Fuel rails fit fine, though clearance is limited.
However, I've found that working with the SuperRam itself is a bear and a half. It's hard to place the bolts (need small fingers, plus no clearance), some gaskets won't seal right, and you need to re-route wires and hoses because the runners are so much bigger than stock.
but ended up with a bit more I think. I had an engine built at Sepped-O-Motive in California and just delivered to me. I have a parts list if you are interested. give me a fax number and I can ship it over to you. II am very interested in the instal going right. I now find out that they don't make a distributor to upgrade the original. Everyone I have seen has the wrong pluggs on it.
I found that there was not a proper connection for the cold start injector on the super ram I got from Summit racing. Looks like it had to be machined in. Then I ordered the accel fuel rails from summit and they don't even have a location for the cold start valve to connect to on the fuel rail side. Thats where my original question in this thread started, I wanted to remove it altogether. I'm really not sure if the Accel fuel rail system flowns more than a stock system, I would guess that in my application it doesn't matter much, but I am selling the entire old engine as a complete unit ready to drop in with every wire and sensor already attached.
LPE hasn't made a SuperRam that accepts a cold-start injector in years... so you're not missing out on anything. As I mentioned above, it's easy to work around and if you're getting a custom chip (which you'll need) then you can fix the harder start that way.
I haven't seen the Accel fuel rails; I'm using my stock ones. At least you won't have to worry about a block-off for the cold-start...
What distributor problems are you having? There's a number of different models out there that fit our cars, or you can get a better coil pack. I have a Davis Unified Ignition that I bought from Ken on here that has a rev limiter as well.

rrubel is correct. Street and Performance, http://www.hotrodlane.cc/ Order the 9th injector delete. Make sure you get the right one. They sell two different ones. Eliminate it and the EGR, block that if I recall correctly with a standard pipe cap. No problems. I run one on my 86, and have a good friend that runs one in his 85 with the original computer. No troubles, no codes.
Well, no troubles when you get it installed properly, and don't have to messw with it The are NOT an easy install
It seems like I cannot fing a high end replacement with the correct plugs on the unit. Let me know where you got yours and I will order one, drop me the number if you have it. . I was also looking for that dist. cap that keeps all the wires routed easily 4 on each side of the cap going to that particular side of the engine, any idea where to get one of those as well.
Looks like it may be the 12600 or the 12611 am I in the correct area? I called there and they told me over the phone that they didn't make a distributor for the 1985 vette. I am not sure what to do.
