Newton talks about the steering system being quite a pain to restore, because he says that it's usually not just one part causing too much play or other problems, it's usually a bunch just getting warm down and needed fixing/changing. Newton says that it's a pretty tough and not very fun thing to restore, but it's quite common.

So, I was just curious. Have you have to work with your steering system? How were your experiences with it? As Newton says?

Thanks! :D

My steering has been fine.I have had to replace a couple of parts because of leaks. The power steering control valve and the power steering pump. Not too bad of a job.

BigBrakeFuelie, was it hard to get at the power steering control valve and pump? That's what I've always figured and wondered. I mean, it must be pretty tough getting to some parts to work on in a car, you know?

so far just changed ps pump and it wasnt that bad.....gave me the experiance in something i never did before

qwall, was it hard to find a power steering pump for your '76, or are all of them pretty standard and not really Vette-specific?

it wasnt that hard at all, took me about 30 seconds to locate it and that's just because i was looking for it in the same place as my talon has it.......removing it and installing the new one took me more than 30 seconds thou :)

Topless 82- I`d like to send you some pics but I`m not equipped from where I post to send any pictures sorry dude.I can say its a great color that is striking and looks black at night. It has flakes of gold in the blue also.I would never change it.

Okay, thanks for the info, qwall! :D Is the pump something you have to change often? Does it "go bad" easily? Thanks! :D

Stallion the power steering control valve was pretty easy. It`s not hard to find.Though it`s true that Vettes don`t leave much room to work on things. My friend and I replaced my exhaust manifolds cause I had a leak and man there was no room to even get in there. They shove everything real close in Vettes it`s tight. In the C4`s they used a clam shell hood that makes it easier to operate under the hood.:_rock

Topless-No problem I`s loved to send you some pics.:cool

steering components...

We replaced our steering parts overall, three times. The first two times, we replaced just 1 or 2 items of the steering and still had leaks. The last time we replaced the WHOLE system and have had success.
I guess third time's the charm!
Heidi

During the periods of time we had the leaks, I grew adept at putting in ps fluid.
I had a regular "ps kit" for filling the reservoir! Towel to throw over my arm to protect arm/clothes from heat/dirt, a tool to puncture new cans of ps fluid and a medium length funnel. I got pretty fast at it!

Steering

I just bought an '82 corvette and the steering was pretty loose. I replaced the power steering control valve ($127) and that did it. It was an easy part to replace and it really took the play out of the steering.

Everything in my PS leaked. I replaced the pump, control valve, slave cylinder . & hoses. The only thing that didn't stop leaking was the pump. Don't know if you did this but, I replaced pump only, not the reservoir. I was told that they rarely go back together without leaking so I changed it again with a complete pump & reservoir..... no leaks.

All of these changes plus a new steering knuckle, rear wheel bearings, shocks, front coil springs, new tires & all wheel alignment made an incredible difference in the way she drives. It's like a new car.

Jim,

I just changed the pump and that stopped the leaking, it wasnt a big leak to begin with but it did leave a few drops in the garage
