Well I pulled my head light knob off the other day. There is a metal clip, I would imagine it is a retaining clip inside of the plastic knob. Is there anything else that holds it on. At this point I think I will bend that clip back, to hold it into position.
the metal clip holds it on. It should work by pressure... and it should slip right on and not come off... to get it off you should have to push the clip towards the front of the knob. if the clip is broken or bent in, you may need a new knob.
I picked up two from www.lonestarcaliper.com at Carlisle for $10. Aftermarket but look stock. You're welcome to either my old one (which comes off, but not THAT easily) or another I got that doesn't have the light symbol on it.

I got my head light knob off an old Chevy Celebrity at a junk yard for 50 cents. Same switch shaft, same spring steel knob retainer. The knob itself is black with a silver face and black light symbol. Not exactly stock but it works for me!

Thanks for that offer, might take you up on it. I would like to give my knob a good look see though. But basically what you all are telling me is that it needs to be replaced. Is it that once it comes off, it wont stay on? Heck, I almost have piece of mind to you some adhesive to hold it on. Can someone post a pick of the actual metal clip.
I don't have a pic, but the thing works based on pressure. the farther 'out' it is bent, the more pressure it will have. the clip is at an angle, bent out (installed, the end will be towards the dash). if you can bend it more towards the dash it should hold stronger.
Don't use adhesive. the only way to get the dash apart is to take that knob off...
I need one for my '84 too. The only ones that I can find come already attached to the rod. Do I need to pull the rod out and replace the whole thing or can I simply pull the knob off of the new one and press it onto the rod that's currently in the car?

I bought a replacement knob and shaft ftom Zip for 19 bucks. I wasnt able to find the knob by itself. I have tried to take the knob off the shaft by depressing the retaining clip but for the life of me I cant get the shaft out. I didnt want to have to crawl under the dash to replace the entire assembly.

On some GM cars there is a clip on the light switch which releases the shaft so it can be pulled out and removed entirely from the switch itself. Not sure if the Corvette is the same. If the Vette switch is the same, and you knew where the release clip is, you should be able to just reach under to release it. I know it's a big IF but maybe worth a try.

I live in Saratoga . Going to a Vette show tomorrow morning at Eagle mills. Its about 30 minutes west of Saratoga on rt29 sould be about 100-150 vettes there. I tried again this morning to get the knob off with no luck. Il looked at the end of the shaft and it has a recessed ring around it so that might lead me to believe this is one of those types of switches. I plan on installing tomorrow so I'll give you a heads up on how many beers you should have handy...
