If you just pulled on the knob and it came off, the knob is damaged and will need to be replaced. The correct way to remove the knob is to press a small screwdriver tip into the slot in the back of the knob to release the spring, and the knob will slide off easily. To install the knob, just push it onto the shaft. The spring will grip the shaft.

I've had mine off a couple of times but now I can't get it off at all.
I'm going to find a replacement before I work on it any more and break it.
