I got my engine all stripped and going to paint it, so now is the time to put headers on, if i dont have to do alot to install them, is there any Headers that bolt right up,iam going with all new stainless exhault,i dont want this thing real load but i do want the extra HP, if they do make a direct fit header, go with stock mufflers??, to keep it to a low rumble, or forget headers and go with nice after market mufflers?and if i do put headers on it, just keep the old air pump , cap off where the small hose"s plug in ?,
if headers is a pain, then i can do without, let me know what others have ran into with them, and if you think its better to stay with all stock exhault.
i can go without coverter, as it will be 25 years old soon and i wont need the Ohio Echeck

One thing to keep in mind is that the car is still subject to the emission standards, just that you do not need the emission inspection to get the car registered. ;)

Hedman makes good long tubes with the AIR hookups. I've read a number of
posts that say you get at least 25 hp with a decent set of headers, but I'd
recommend staying 1-5/8 tube unless you're going really larger cubes and
a radical cam - best for street rpm range throttle response and a broader
torque curve.

MAC, how does the diameter of the exhaust pipes themselves effect the torque and idle characteristics of a modified motor? i have the usual cam, rocker arms, headers, carb and manifold changes

thanks

Actually, I ws refering to the diameter of the individual header tubes. Smaller diameter
generally equals higher exhaust flow velocity and therefore better scavenging, also maybe something about reversion flow and timing which supposedly pushes some of the intake charge that's leaked into the header pipe during overlap back into the cyl, but I'm no airflow engineer, so ?? Usually, the 1-5/8 header tubes work better with a moderate cube / moderate rpm engine by helping achieve a broader torque curve at the expense of just a slight reduction in power right at the hp peak.
