Hello, I've been told that the first upgrade - with the most reward would be to add headers. I'm a novice and my 79 vette has no upgrades besides a shift kit. I have heard that HEDMAN and HOOKER have good headers. In looking at headers, they range from $100 a pair to $800. Can anyone reccomend some decent ones for me for a reasonable price, under $350.

Thanks guys,
Nate

I installed ceramic coated Dynomax headers on my 69. They look good, run great... I have these connected into a chambered exhaust system, so they nice an throaty and roar with WOT (wide open throttle).

Nate, The reality is that if your motor is stock, it probably won't help to add headers. I'd try advancing the timing and some bigger jets first, maybe run the rockers a little looser than a full turn. Also higher ratio rocker arms will make the cam think it's a little bigger than it is. Smaller diameter rear tires will improve acceleration by effectively lowering the gear ratio. The real trick to making power is the heads and how much they can flow. Headers may also make your car illegal for highway use if you have to pass smog inspections

Having said that: - I just installed a new crate ZZ 383 stroker in my 78 and replaced a very nice, almost new set of Corvette 1 5/8" Heddman coated headers with some new Hooker 1 7/8" SS sidepipe headers and would like to sell the heddmans for a reasonable price. Contact me at kbwillson@gci.net for pics or further info. Check my eb@y feedback as 1unsafe1.
Here is the link to some photos of my project, I just fired it up today and it sounds very radical ! Please check out the photos and comment on my progress. I had no problem fitting the Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold using a dropped base air cleaner.

You can view it as a slide show as well.

Headers and true dual exhaust will work wonders. Gotta get rid of that 2-1-2 exhaust.

First mod on my '76 was Dynomax headers and MAD true dual chambered exhaust. Noticeable improvement.

Dynomax and hooker are great sets...Ive got a set of Hooker SuperComp Ceramics on my 73 and they went in like a breeze...no "finessing" with a ball peen hammer......:upthumbs
