On a '71, what is the best procedure to replace the headlight switch? What has to be removed? What is tricky about it? Thanks. NH

NH,
Remove the lower column cover and the two screws holding the headlite vac override switch. Remove the two bolts on the steering column. The column will drop about 2 inches. Remove the 7 screws holding the dash panel. Rotate the panel until you can reach the switch. Pull the headlite knob out, reach around the switch and locate the spring-loaded button. Push the button and then pull the knob out of the switch. Unplug the two vac hoses. Remember which way they were attached. Remove the wiring plug. Unscrew the nut and remove the switch. When installing the new switch be sure to line up the tang on the switch with the slot in the ground ring and in the dash.

Excellent description above!!!

I'll add to not forget to disconnect your battery. Also it 'might' be easier to remove the retaining nut and then disconnect the hoses/wire because you can maneuver it and partially pull the switch out past the dash for easier access to teh wire/hose connections - just personal preference. Also sometimes you have to jiggle the sprung retainer button a little to get the pull knob to release.

Repros are like $65. But unless it's a vacuum switch problem - they can often be easily rebuilt/repaired. The rest of the switch is typical GM fare so bits and pieces can be had in junkers. The variable resistor wears out at it's base or breaks near it's base connector. These can be flipped over and the bad rings cut out and the end resoldered or reriveted or whatever maybe...

Thank you guys for helping accomplish lights in the interior of my 71. Thanks to your instructions I can drive at night. The dash lights look like fireworks. Okay, maybe I'm just a bit excited, here. Hope I can help you out soon. NH
