Heat Barrier Kits

Has anyone tried the aftermarket heat barrier kits? Is there a significant reduction in the amount of heat that is felt through the floor/transmission tunnel?

Very Pricey. You can do just as good a job, if not better, by going to Lowes and obtaining a roll of Reflectix insulation and foil tape. That is what I did. Look at the front carpet section of my web page showing interior projects.

I put all new carpet in Rare, and I followed Bob's advice and went to Lowes and bought the aluminum insulation roll. I bought the bigger roll and had more that enough to do my car. I might even have enough left to do MAKO 81's later this spring

Bob left out how easy it was to shape and form fit I was impressed and it does keep the heat out and I think it even helped quiet down the inside too..

Thanks for the info. It looks like it's pretty simple to install and if it's reasonablly priced I'll go with it. I'll stop by Home Depot after work today. Thanks again guy's.

Home Depot didn't carry it in the Atlanta area so I had to go to Lowes. Make sure you get some GM carpet adhesive, have a good sharp razor knife and the foil tape. This can be hard to find as it was over in the tape and adhesive section rather than with the insulation when I went looking. The beauty of this stuff is that the foil backing on the front and back is somewhat mallable and retains its shape, allowing you to shape it and pull it out for the cuts.

I see you live in Rancho Cambodia, my old stomping grounds. 4 years at Sac State living off La Riviera drive in several rentals before I bought my first house in 85 over in that planned unit development behind Capital City Christian.

How much does a roll of Reflectix run from Loews, and how big of a roll do you need?

I don't remember the exact price of the large roll, but I think it was around $28 for some reason (CRS), I also use one of those sissors that cuts the penny in half :L to cut the foil, it worked really good.

I didn't have any new blades for my "Box Cutter" at the time and found the sissors to work good

After pulling the entire interior of my 74 I went to the local speed shop and purchased a roll of jute back, foil covered insulation. I installed it with 3M adhesive, silicone sealer, and foil tape. Take your time and your effort will be well worth it.

I bought the 25 foot roll of Reflectex from Home Depot for about $25. I stuck that stuff everywhere I could find a spot, had to go back and get a second roll. Absolutely wonderful stuff. Regular scissors cut the stuff. The only caution is that the foil covering is fairly delicate, and some care should be used no to tear it before the carpet goes on. Sort of like home insulation, you won't know if you got enough until it's too late to add more.
