Hi. Thanks for taking the time to review my post. I've just come into the Chicago winter, and the clutch on my 1996, 41 K , LT4 Collector's Edition is on the floor. Upon towing to the dealer, he states the slave and master cylinder are out. (I agree that there is no pressure in the clutch, seems consistent.) In addition, my "Service Engine Soon" light is out, and has been for awhile (3 weeks), and two "sensors" need to be replaced. Upon stating this, he lets me know that my aftermarket warranty will cover none of these repairs (supposed to be comprehensive, and cover everthing except "maintenance" items), and that the total to replace them all is $1300. Seems a bit steep to me, but maybe I'm just ignorant to the inherent costs of Corvette Ownership. The vette is at "Z Frank" Chevrolet, at 6000 N Western. If anyone could help and give me an idea as if this pricing is in line, prior experiences at this dealership, etc etc...Looking to gather all of my information before I give my go ahead. All responses are GREATLY appreciated. Thanks so much!

repair costs

Not sure about the other items but clutch cyls are expensive. Even aftermarket places like Autozone will run 100+ for the slave with the master around $150. I'm sure new GM are more. Rebuild kits are available if you can do it yourself but you probably have to rule that out if the car is at Z's. It wouldn't save $ to have a GM tech do the rebuild because labor costs would negate any savings. Add fill and bleed procedures to the time involved for replacement of cylinders and it will be several hours + parts costs.
I don't know what labor costs are in the city but even out in the boonies are reaching $70-$80/hr.
For some reason, Vette repairs seem to cost more. If you get some kind of warrantee for the repairs in exchange for the high repair $, It might take some of the sting away.
:cry

Terry's about right on with the labor rates today. In October of '98 I paid $183 for the slave alone, with another $97 for labor and around $14 for fluids. I was a short-sighted when I did not replace both when doing the master in late '95. The cost for the master then was $170.

Those prices are the dealer prices for that time period.

The estimate quoted you sounds reasonable, as long as they do the job right the first time. Do yourself a favor and replace both cylinders when you replace one. ;)

Thanks

Thanks so much for all of the input..I'm gonna call around a bit tomorrow morning, and then go from there.....Much appreciated. I'll keep you all updated!

If you are going to buy your own parts, check out GM parts direct. OE Master cylinder is about $135 there.
