Well recently I took my car to get my rack n pin replaced. I had it replaced on my old 86 when it was still running and the part itself costed two hundred something; with labor it came out to 3-something. Talk to my mechanic today, grand total was $636.00. I couldnt believe it, argued with him for a second then told him I would call him back later. The price of the part sounded right, but when he said he had 9 hours of labor in... I was just like no way. Anyway I can't find my old receipt so I was wondering if a few people could chime in. If you know what you are doing, how long should replacing the rack and pinion take? This guy specializes in vettes, so i just dont understand. Is he trying to screw me? What should I do?

Thanks,
Mark

Labor Time, Steering Rack,84-85 Corvette!! As per Mitchell, Rack: 3.2 hr. Toe Adjust .6 = 3.8 Hr. How much was Rack?? :upthumbs junk!!

Our shop charges $77/hr for labor and the 3.8 is what we quote for labor time. That would be around $300 for the install and alignment. A reman rack from AC Delco retails at $574 (locally) and one from ARI (American Remanufacturers Inc.) retails for around $230. Our local sales tax is 8.4% and that would bring the total to around $575.

So your guy is a bit high. What labor rate is he quoting? At our $77, it looks like is is quoting 4.8 hrs. 9 hours for a rack R&R is BS.

My Shop Labor Rate is $58.00 here in the Booney's!! :crazy junk!!

he is $40/hr I believe... He does it out of his own home. When he told me 9 hours and $600 something, my jaw dropped. The rack was about $250. What am I suppose to do? I've never encountered a problem like this before...
