Hi again anyone out there know what the round dampner on the drive shaft yoke
is for on a 700R4 trans ?where can I get a new one?
The local chevy dealer never heard of it and can't help me,the rubber is bad on it and I know it will not last if I run the car with it.It is on a 1986 L98 vett coupe.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!

I took one off my '71 Z-28 with a TH400. I believe it was the original trans and drive shaft. I did not know GM used any of these on any '80 models or later cars. You probably will need to buy a standard yoke and re-balance the drive shaft.

when I hade the driveshaft replaced on mine I didn't notice such a thing. I can snap a pic of mine and see. I would just get a replacement shaft with yoke, so they can be balanced.

Best of Luck

Thanks everyone the local NAPA store found it for me, took 3 days calling around the napa mgr found it even chevy coulden't find what it was.I'll send pics later.

My '90 has one also. Its some sort of harmonic dampener. I'm glad you were able to find one. Now I know where to go if I need one.

We need pictures! Now I have to see what you guys are talking about. :confused

Sorry guy's NAPA did not come up with the right yoke it was twice the size of the one on my drive shaft now back to square 1??;shrug
I have to pick up the drive shaft I'll take picks and post.

The "doughnut" is there to reduce vibration, it's actually vulcanized rubber. Some driveshafts have them, some do not. My original driveshaft did have one, but when I snapped it at the track I replaced it with a driveshaft that did not have one.
If you are replacing the driveshaft make certain the driveshaft is balanced.

Is it a rubber disk with four metal bushings through it, to take bolts? If so, most late 1980s Jaguars had them between the diff input flange and the end of the propshaft. They were called a "Jurid" after the manufacturer, and were indeed for vibration and angled-alignment. They also caused consternation on the Jaguar lists because some cars didn't have them....!

Well I got the 2 nd yoke from napa but no dampner. I dont know if the trans can be run with out it or not my trans guy has flat forehead and rounded sholders when i asked him about it.
The new unit has the machined surface for the dampner but no one knows where to get one??

Here are the pic http://www.mauidiving.com/car/yoke.htm
Thanks guys ,I guess I will run it and see if anything explodes!!:confused

Nothing is going to explode! If anything, you will feel vibration when you drive the car. If you feel no vibration all is well, but if you do you can bring the driveshaft to a driveline shop and they will balance it for about $40.00. If balancing is necessary, the technician will place weights on the driveshaft. "I" would have the driveshaft checked before installing to eliminate the possibility of installing it twice. You can do it yourself in under an hour.
