The hood release cable snapped. It has an LT1 hood. How can I get it open?

On my 73 there is a plastic cap covering a hole. I have heard that you can pop it out and then use a long screw driver to activate it. If you would like I can snap a picture of mine open so you know what you are going for?

Tim, you would be a life saver if you did that! If the picture is really close up, please let me know the vicinity of the cap so I can locate it. Thank you!

I think you could also pull the egg crate off and reach your hand up there and pull the latch that way.

You guys are great. Thank you! I will try those techniques. I will keep looking back here to see it Tim posts any pictures. I am sure they will be helpful. Again, thank you for helping.

Will I be able to lift the wiper housing manually? The car is dead. Real dead. Unjumpably dead!

I had the same problem. What I did was remove the Wiper Motor arms from the nut where they attach to the motor in the center of the compartment. Then you can move the wipers out of the way. You can do all this from the outside with the hood closed.

But the wipers are hidden under a housing that lifts up to expose the wipers when they are called to use. Will I damage anything by manually lifting the housing to expose the wiper bay?

I forgot you were dealing with an earlier model that has the Wiper cover. Mine is an 80 without the cover, and I don't know much about how to open the cover. I do believe it is vacuum operated, but that's all I know.

I guess you can try to pull it up gently, but I don't know how that system operates.

Hang tight & I'm sure someone else will come along with an answer.

Hi: I had the same problem once on my '72. What I did was crawl under the car on the driver's side. You can look up & see the closed underside of the hood where the hood latches on the driver's side. I took a long screwdriver & stuck it up there where the latch lever is & popped the hood open that way. If all of the suggestions that the other guys gave you on the "Forum" don't work, then try this. Good luck.

I had the cable break on a 71. I took off the egg crate side vent on the drivers side and reached up and pulled on the cable. It has been a few years ago, but I think that was all I had to do.

Good luck!

Here is a pic of the cap on the fire wall(drivers side). The darker black circle on top. On my 73 if you work the drivers side it works the other.

Here is a pic of the lever on the hood. This is what you will be looking to get to either from fire wall or from under the car. Unless there were big changes the drivers side should open both sides.

I had the same problem on my 76, I don't know how I would have done it if the motor was in the car!!! Without the motor I just crawled up under and wala!!! My case is nothing like yours(motor) , but I would be asking the same question if my motor was in the car!!! Good luck!!!

Tim, et al., thank you all for your help. I couldn't get the wiper housing cover open far enough to work within it, so I took the side gill route. Worked like a charm. It came open!

Again, thank you everyone. So many replies and so soon after I posted. You guys are a great bunch.
