HELP!!! I cannot get my hood open! FIXED!!!

Hi guys,

I made a big dumb mistake today! I was changing the valve cover gaskets today and finished up and went to shut the hood. It was at that exact time that I saw my flashlight still under there. Well the hood came down but didn't shut quite right. The driver's side was almost completely closed but the passenger side was up about an inch and a half (because the flashilight was obstructing the hood). The hood release wouldn't work because it had the flashlight was obstructing it. I managed to squeeze the flashlight from under the hood by pulling up on the passenger side of the hood. Now the hood is "shut" but not quite as well as it used to. And the hood release still doesn't work. I cannot get my hood open now. Any tricks? I appreciate any suggestions! What a stupid mistake!!!

Check out this tech note from Mid-America. It should help.

Tritium 007,

Thanks for the link. It does help me somewhat but it is shown on a '78. I think I have found the port on the passenger side of my 1972, but I am not sure what to look for on the driver's side.

Could somebody take a picture of their driver's side release port on a 1968-72 Corvette so that I can see what it is that I am looking for? Thanks for your help, I am a bit stressed!

Thanks for all your help guys! I ended up removing the "egg-crate" just behind the front driver's side wheel and had no problem reaching the hod release mechanism. I was also very lucky that the cable had not snapped, the hood just shut funny due to the flashlight. Once I got her open, she has worked perfectly since. I don't know if you '68-'69 or '73-'82 owners can use the same trick but we '70-'72 owners need to keep this one tucked away in our 'box of tricks'!!! Thanks again!

This is a picture of the egg-crate I pulled out to get at the hood release mechanism. Two screws on the outside and one hidden screw underneath the car. I had to put the car up on a jack-stand to get to the one underneath, but it was no biggie.
