Can someone tell me where, on the internet, I can find notes or pictures as to where the motor identification numbers are? I need to know where they are located on the motor. Thanks, RR

There are three locations. The block casting number is behind the driver's side cylinder head on the block flange where the bellhousing bolts on, the block casting date code is in the same location on the passenger side, a little closer to the centerline of the engine, and the engine assembly code and the car's VIN derivative are both stamped on a flat machined surface of the block that protrudes directly in front of the passenger side cylinder head. Post what you find and we can decode it for you.

Thanks John, but I just found out that is not what I needed to know after all. What I NEED to know is, on the MOTOR identification tab, how are the numbers assembled? Not the VIN but the MOTOR. In other words how are the numbers arranged, in what order? Thanks again so much, RR

Your pad should look similar to the photo below (it's a '62); the Flint Engine assembly date code/suffix will be at the inboard end of the pad in 1/4" characters, and the car's VIN derivative will be stamped on the outboard end of the pad in 3/16" characters. If the engine is original to the car, the VIN derivative stamping will start with a "1", and the next six digits will match the last six digits on the VIN tag on the steering column.

Hi!

On the stamp pad on the right front surface of the block you should see the Vin number and the engine identification stamp. It should be F (Flint) 01 (month) 11 (day) and the suffix in my case a 270HP CU.

Hope this helps

John, thanks so much for you help. But, I have one other question. You are saying that there are 7 VIN derivative numbers (I also see that in the picture you sent of your 62 vette). My corvette book says there should only be 6 numbers, thus being the last 6 digits on the VIN tag. My VIN number starts with "1" for my 61 vette. Any ideas on this? Thanks again

Thanks

Hi: As you can see, John, says there should be 7 numbers before the F0224RE, them being a "1" stating the car is a "61 vette" then the last 6 digits of the VIN number (as seen in his picture, actually he has a 2 because his is a 62 vette). But, my corvette book says there should only be 6 numbers (them being the last 6 digits of the VIN number). You have a "61" right? What or how many numbers do you have on your's? Sorry to be so much trouble. Thanks, RR

Your book is incorrect; in 1960, the VIN derivative stamped on the pad was only the last six digits of the car's VIN number. Starting in 1961, the model year digit ("1" for 1961, "2" for 1962, etc.) was added as a prefix to the six VIN digits, making a 7-digit number. What's stamped on your pad?
