2003 Anny Coupe
Picked up my new '03 Anny Red Coupe from out-of State this week and the interior noise can be deafening --depending on road surface it can be very noisy inside.
Has anyone tried to do something about this? Is it the run flats? Can some insulation be installed at the wells/interior?

Sounds like the exhaust system...what kind is it...probably not stock...change back to stock if the noise is too much for you...:beer

I don't notice the noise at all, after a few months or years it seems normal. It would be abnormal for a car such as a corvette to be quiet.

Noise? What Noise?

The car is stock, even the CD and Video were never opened, had 900 miles on it and now has over 3000. The noise may seem normal, you're just experiencing hearing loss.... Yes, I do expect some noise from driving but not this much!

The run flat tires are quite noisy. Some people change to another brand of run flats. I have heard people say that the Firestones are quieter; I don't know about the Michelins. There is also an insulating product that can go in the cargo area under the carpet. Try a search on this site for details. I know that I have seen details posted.

The sound deadener product that seems to perform the best and is easiest to install is Dynamat. If you have the stock exhaust system, then a combination of sound deadener and non-runflat tires should get you close to a silent car. If you put a sound deadener like Dynamat around the wheel wells and keep the runflats, you will have some noise. The best solution would be to replace the runflats with a non-runflat tire and carry the flat repair kit that is available for the Z06. There is just no way around it - the runflats are noisier than non-runflats.

I feel (or hear?) your pain....:cry

There are some extensive threads in CorvetteForum.com that discuss fixes people have developed to reduce the noise. You will also note that in virtually all of the articles about the C6, noise reduction from C5 levels was mentioned as one of the critical design goals. Unfortunately, GM has not released a kit to retrofit the C6 developments to the C5, although some are hoping that the Goodyear runflat tires (developed for the C6), the source of the noise, may be available in the 3rd generation design for the C5 sizes at some time in the future. Other runflat tire brands reportedly create less noise, although some claim that is just a feature of a new tire, as they age they appear to become noisier.

Dynamat has been used by some people, it is a "a patented, lightweight elastomeric butyl and aluminum constrained-layer vibrational damper" according to their website. It bonds directly to the surface it is applied to.

There are other materials available, I am looking at material from Soundcoat, which is a lead septum bonded between two sheets of foam. I believe it may be more effective than Dynamat, although the materials are rated by two different techniques, which makes direct comparison impossible (at least by me.... LOL.)

I made a Plexiglas divider for my coupe, which sepaarates the hatch area from the passenger compartment. I believe it works well, proof of the pudding is that when I turn the fader to all rear, I can barely hear the rear speakers at normal volume levels. Of course, the fronts make noise as well....

L :w

Change the tires and you'll notice a huge difference! The Goodyears are too noisy.

I installed Bridgestone Pole Position S03's on my 99 and the noise level was cut by 80% or more.

Michelins are also know for being very quiet.

A cargo mat in the hatch will also help. You can get them from Ecklers and Mid America. They Basic Balck Mat is cheap and good quality and does the job. Also make sure that you have the three covers in place in over the hatch compartments. . .

email me if you have any questions. .

Of course another alternative is earplugs. I haven't found road noise objectionable in my convertible, with runflats and all. However on long road trips in one of my other cars I use earplugs, due to aftermarket exhaust and my penchant for driving with my windows down. Check out the events forum and maybe try and make it to Newbury Park cruise one Saturday. Cruises are only until Sept. 24 for this season. See ya around.

I just bought a 97 a month ago and it is too quiet for me. It does not have run flats and the center storage cover is missing (a longtime C-5 owner told me I was better off without it:L ) which might be the reason it is so quiet.

It has pirelli tires on it and stock exhaust.

BTW I can't hear very well anyway;LOL and am used to sidepipes, but even my wife commented it was too quiet.

I can hear you now....

Yes, I brought along some earplugs when I took a plane out to pick up the car. I'd driven a used one and was prepared for some noise but didn't think it would be that much.

Thanks to all for reponding, I'll look into the mat and when my tires are used change them to quieter run-flats.

These mats, do they go under the capeting in the rear compartment or just inside the wheel wells under the car? Both?

New to Corvettes but what a nice time I had here last night, first time with the roof off and the weather was just perfect.

Don't want to start a fight but went to a Corvette about a month ago to see what it was like and was really surprised when a topic of MANDATORY attendance was discussed....

I live in Oxnard, CA, any suggestions about clubs?

Congrats on your new ride and on finding the best forum on the net.

I used to live in Ventura County...try Red Line Corvettes, a club that used to meet in Camarillo.

All the best,
1 :w

oh my god, are you kidding?
LOL
I realize it's all relative but if you want loud and deafening, try driving my car for an hour. A '65 coupe with the 327/365 motor and sidepipes.
Forget the radio - it's useless in there. good thing I love the music from the sidepipes as that's all I can hear anyway!
:D

Tried the firestones, they were slightly better than the Goodyears. Michelins on the car now. Love em, they are quiet, don't tramline as bad, and stick.

The Dynamat goes on the inside of the car under the carpeting. If memory serves, it comes with adhesive on one side so that it can be stuck in place.

I'm driving an 03 AE vert and I can't complain too much. Then again I have a set of hearing aids that I never wear.

With the vert, you hear a lot of noise from outside. And with 22K+ on the tires, they are getting very noisy. Wish they'd wear out a little faster so I can replace them.

Otherwise, the car doesn't seem any noisier than it should be.

Check out the shock stuffers and make sure they have been removed. If they are still installed, they can cause a really annoying ride and extra noise.
