Help my 96 is making a SUCKING/BLOWING sound and its not the DIC...

:D Ok now that I have everyones attention, I have noticed my 96 auto vert. to be making a brief sucky Hiccup sound when its turned off under the hood is this normal? Is this the engine decopressing? This is what it sounds like anyway like a brief rush/release of air or something coming from the motor area.

You're probably just hearing engine compression/decompression as the engine stops. Since the cylinders are half way through their various cycles, and the gasses are not being burned, they simply back out of the cylinders depending on what valves are open/closed. Nothing to worry about. You can check this on your vette by removing the air cleaner. This noise will be more pronounced with the filter off because the filter will not be absorbing some of the sound.

Oh good I figured it was something like that. I always fear a "sound" any time I usually hear one it ends up costing me $500.00! :D

blackice,

How long has it been doing that? Check the front and rear clamps on the air intake hose. I had mine loosened up the other day after having replaced my water pump and Opticrap and I heard the same thing. When I tightened the clamps up the sound disappeared. Are you running a modified air intake (in any way)?

Ted

It has been making this sound since I got the car last May. I dont really know if anything has been modified, I don't think so. I do know I have an intake gasket oil leak so I wonder if a gap there could cause this also. I will try the clamps for sure.

Intake gasket leak. Let me guess, rear? I doubt that would make noise. It did you would be spurting quarts of oil per hour!

Ted

No its leaking in the front somewhere its in the area above the water pump. I can see it coming around and down from there above the opti.

I did tighten the clamps at the ductwork and they did need a few turns fore and aft. I started the car and still got that air gasping sound when switched off.
