I have a 1992 Corvette. It has been at the dealership for a month now and they cant find the problem. The speedometer read "0" all the time. All the other functions of the cluster work correctly except for the speedometer. It has had a new Cluster put in, a new BCM and a new VSS. They have check all the grounds and wiring and can't seem to resolve the problem. They say there is a signal from the transmission to the ECM and then a signal from the ECM to BCM but then it creates no reading for the speedometer after they programm the BCM and power it up. Has anyone ran into a similar situation? Any suggestions could be helpfull. THanks

I haven't been able to find anything specific to the 1992 model year yet, but I did find a service bulletin for 1996 that is related to speedometer troubles:

Odometer/Speedometer - ACDelco Service Center Locations
I can't find anything on SB "668304A". ;shrug

If I turn up anything else I'll be sure to post it here. :CAC

Your VSS (vehicle speed sensor) may have failed, bad ground, or disconnected. You will notice that after about 25 miles of driving, you will enter into "limp home" mode.

Thanks for the input guys, the problem ended up being the BCM. 3 BCM's later finally fixed the problem. They only make a reman BCM now and the first two were bad. Whats that tell you about GM's rebuild service. But the speedo works fine now and I haven't had any problem out of it since I got it back.

What is a "BCM" please???

BCM= Body Control Module, it is a computer that runs a majority of your electronics inside your car. It is a seperate computer from the one that runs the engine.

I was not aware that there is a BCM, a second computer in addition to the PCM... Where is the BCM located in the car and what does it control???

Cheers,

Sounds expensive.....just for the part

Actually the BCM is not that expensive. A Reman from GM is about $150.00. From what I understand the BCM operates the instrument cluster, some Automatice temerature control functions, cruise, and radio system, and alarm system, and controls the VATS . It is in a pain in the spot area located under the dash behind the radio and ATC module. It requires the upper dash removal to get to it from what I understand. This information is based upon what the machanic told me that had to install 3 of them before he got a good one from GM. But since I have had no problems with any of my electrical functions of the car after a good one was installed.

SSTibet, nice car you have there. Ankara is a nice place. Been thru there several times .I love Turkey, one of my favorite places to visit back in the days that the military brought me there. Castle by the Sea was always a fun place to go R & R.. Plus the people are great there too. I don't miss the "Rocky". But sure do miss that "Tuborg Gold"

BamaVette, thanks for the compliments for Turkey. I studied college in UK, I have been to USA quite a few times, have travelled to Europe, middle east and far east Asia. And still I find Turkey as a world of wonders. There is so much of different cultures, food, history and geography here.

Where do you mean by "Castle by the Sea"? Is that Bodrum or Kusadasi, or some other place? It is "Raki" not "Rocky" my friend, I am sure you mean the alcoholic drink with anise flavor?

Did we not have the "Efes" beer when you were in Turkey? I like that one most for beer; but I am a religious consumer of "Raki"... The best drink for the tough guys like me :)

Cheers,

Selim
