HELP on trans

My mechanic tells my zf 6 sp is very sick, then he tells me a new one is around 6 grand. Is this reasonable? Need help on other dependable less expensive options!! All suggestions welcome!
Thankyou in advance, Pat

Thats probably the price of a new one if you buy it through him(major mark up).Check around on having it rebuilt or just buying a low mileage used one.Hemmings is a good place for that.I cant remember for sure but last year I had to get a price on a 6 speed for a customer and I was getting prices of 3-4k.That was for a brand new one in the crate.

**** $6000 is WAY TOO MUCH!!! ****

I just had to replace the one in my '95. I bought a rebuilt one from Kurt White of White Racing Products. I paid $2500 for it. It works great. I've been driving it for about 2 weeks now.

He is out of Tampa so I went and picked it up since it was near enough to save the shipping charges.

PS: Jim Pace Pontiac (www.paceparts.com) sells a brand new one for $4000 or so.

Also, you can get a Richmond 6-speed transmission for Corvette from Summit Racing for $3500 brand new.
