Help to diagnose a ticking

Last weekend I changed the dist. cap,rotor and plugs on the 68 427/400. Took it for a drive and it ran better than it ever has. backed it into garage, the wife came out complaining it was too loud so naturally I revved it up several times around 5 grand and then it started this loud ticking on left side "I think". Shut it down for the day and then the next morning tried to start and it would barely fire. It would crank and crank and only pop off a couple times and also puke fuel out the center carb. What would cause the ticking and would that prevent it from starting ? What do you think..
The engine is original with 30k miles and appears to have never been rebuilt.

We don't have much to go on. To get some more concise responses, you could run a compression test and verify the static timing of the engine.

Given the above, I'm going to guess the engine as sustained some kind of valvetrain failure or that the timing chain or sprockets have failed and "jumped a tooth."

Such a failure in a 40 year old engine that got rev'ed in neutral to near its rev limit would not surprise me.

Either you broke a valve spring or the timing chain gave it up.

Not to mention that Big Block's like to break valve springs,bend push rods and stretch timing chains anyway,almost a sure bet if rev'ed several times near red line without a load!!

Can I just spin the push rods by hand and determine if they're bent or do i have to remove the rockers. And if bent and broken, do I have to replace all springs and rods at same time ?
How can I tell if timing chain has been stretched or skipped ?
Where do I buy them ?
