HELP!!! Windshield Water Spot Woes

I read a post some time ago that offered 0000 steel wool as the cure all to water spots on the windshield. WELL not on my 95 Corvette, Ive tried several houshold items and a few industrial products I have in the garage with no success.
WHAT will get those stubborn baked on water spots off of my windshield. (Other than my 16 OZ ball peen hammer and a trip to the dealer for a new glass).:duh

Try Bon Ami cleanser. You might even use a tad of CLR with it as long as you keep it off the paint.

Don't use Comet or any other cleanser than Bon Ami.

If it doesn't work, some glass places will polish your windshield and get the spots off but that's not as inexpensive as the cleanser.

Use just enough water to make a slurry....about the consistancy of watery grits. Polish the WS with the slurry and rinse it. You can put some CLR in the slurry but I wouldn't do that unless the straight water doesn't get the job done.

I think I would try tooth paste before I would use Bon Ami. Also try your clay Bar.

I use 0000 steel wool and running water and it works well. You might try white vinegar on the steel wool and then rubbing the vinegar around and letting it sit for a few minutes. The vinegar should dissolve the deposits and the steel wool should remove them. Rinse thoroughly and wash with soap and water and dry the window off with a chamois.

Have you tried "claying" the windshield? The same clay used for the finish can be used on glass as well. Works wonders!

There is a product called "BAR KEEPERS FRIEND" I have used it on my Jeep but mainly bought it for my fish tanks. Get water spots from the fish jumping around in them all the time. Havnt used it on Vette glass but cant relly see the difference between corvette, Jeep, and fish tank glass

"Bar Keepers Friend" is similar to Bon Ami in that it's a mild abrasive. I use it on my stainless steel sinks.

There are also mild polishes made specifically for glass. Both Zaino and AutoGlym offer one, others probably do too.

Don't use toothpaste, use Bon Ami, or Bar Keepers Friend, also you could use Micromesh, I've used Micromesh on my windows and it works perfectly, plus it polishes out tiny scratches...

Windshield Water Spot Problem Solved (MANY THANKS)

I want to thank all the CAC members who replied to my "Windshield Water Spot Woes", I was able to get the job done with the helpful ideas provided.

As it turned out, my biggest problem was removing some layers of wax build up or possible RAIN X from the previous owner.

The method that seemed to reduce the elbow effort the most was a combination of a polishing compound reduced with white vinegar into a” SLURRY" as explained in a reply, with the 0000 steel wool as the applicator pad.

I was a little apprehensive as to the abrasiveness of this combination so I tested the concoction in an inconspicuous area below the hood line and kept close observation with a jewelers loop magnifying glass for surface scratching.

I removed the wiper arms for ease and working convenience and also used a razor blade scraper tool to remove a line of dirty calcified buildup above the rubber trim at the bottom of the glass on each side of the windshield.

All in all, what a big difference to the overall appearance, the windshield and the surrounding trim now look new. I will put RAIN X back on the glass making sure that NO SPOTS remain before application.
